Is Back to the Future’s Future Date TODAY?

In the 80’s, Back to the Future‘s future date seemed to be… well, very far in the future.

In fact, in Back to the Future’s future, there were flying cars. And all the people who are our age in the 1985 version were elderly, balding and aged. And not to mention that the future we all came to expect from the film did not come to pass.

In Back to the Future’s future, not only did the McFlys and their co-residents of the future use faxes, they also drove Pontiacs, a dead brand. Somewhat like Blade Runner and every other not-too-distant future work, Back to the Future‘s future was plagued by lack of knowledge of the immediate.

But for the past few years, an image of the display in Marty’s DeLorean has been circulating, purporting to be proof that the date in Back to the Future is upon us — subsequently making us all feel very old as well as humorously pointing out that the date in Back to the Future did not yet bring us hoverboards and flying cars.

The Back to the Future future date thing went around in 2010, claiming the future was here, but was widely debunked.

Now it’s making the rounds again, and (are our memories that short?) again, the Back to the Future future date is not yet here.

The clock in the time-traveling DeLorean displayed a date three years from now, in 2015. And while we are not likely to get flying cars by then, it’s still not 2015. Maybe when Back to the Future‘s future date arrives for real, so will our sky SUVs.
