Martin Sheen Recovering From Quadruple Bypass Surgery

Martin Sheen’s son Emilio Estevez let everyone know that his father is currently recovering after quadruple bypass surgery. Estevez posted a tweet about the news that Sheen was recovering with a nice photo:

This is the first operation that Sheen has undergone. Emilio explained on a Facebook page for the film The Way about his father’s condition.

“The decision to operate on [Sheen’s] heart was a proactive one, not an emergency situation.”

He continued, “With my mother Janet and our family by his side and under the coordination of his extraordinary team of cardiologists, doctors and nurses, my father displayed great courage, strength and humility as he took on this challenge.

“Not surprisingly, he is recovering beautifully, out of the ICU and is expected to not only be home for Christmas, but be 100% by the time he returns to work on season three of the Netflix series, ‘Grace and Frankie’ early next year.”

Estevez told fans, “Please lift him up and keep him in your prayers.”

This isn’t the first heart scare Martin Sheen has had. Although this surgery was proactive, he did have a heart attack. Back in 2011, Sheen wrote about his heart attack for Guideposts, and how it made him regain a sense of faith.

Sheen had a heart attack in 1977, which he explains in great detail. After not being able to sleep, and being emotionally and physically drained, Sheen leapt out of bed once he felt a pain in his arm, one of the telltale signs of a heart attack. He didn’t know what was happening until he started feeling all of the symptoms. Then he explains powerful explosive pains in his chest that left him unable to stand or walk.

“I slithered slowly over to the closet and, one by one, yanked down pieces of clothing, then twisted and pulled my way into them as best I could. Another blast of pain hit my chest, and I knew what was wrong—a heart attack, the same thing that had claimed the lives of my mother, father and two of my older brothers. I knew I was dying.”

He went on to write, “I had been shocked into recalling something I had known all along but had forgotten: that love is the true foundation of happiness. Love of family, love of people, love of God.”

The Sheen/Estevez clan has made news in the last month or so. Emilio’s brother, Charlie Sheen, revealed on the TODAY show that he was HIV-positive. Sheen came out in support of his son at an event in Florida just a day after. Sheen was proud of his son for having the courage to come out with his diagnosis. The actor went on to say that he wasn’t sure that Charlie was going to reveal his status, even though he was pushing his son for months to get it out to the world.

“He had been leading up to this sort of story for several months, and we kept encouraging him to do it. And he kept backing away and backing away because it was like going to his own execution, I guess.”

“It was the most difficult thing he’d ever done,” Martin Sheen said. “And he kind of sealed it when he called Matt Lauer last week and asked if he could go on.”

Sheen, who choked up during the speech, said that if he were to ask the people in the room if they had known someone who had dealt with drugs or alochol, there wouldn’t be a person that wouldn’t raise their hand.

“When someone comes to them-self, they have the moment of clarity, and they reveal their secrets — which all of us have — in public, it is a great sense of relief. It is a miraculous occasion.”

He went on to say that he couldn’t believe the “level of courage” that he witnessed from Charlie.
