Watch a potentially historic NFL Thursday Night Football game pitting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers against the host St. Louis Rams live online — a game that could be historic not for the two sub-.500 teams that will slug it out as the Buccaneers desperately try to stay alive in the NFC playoff race, but because the December 17 contest could turn out to be the final National Football League game ever played in St. Louis. Or at least, the last one for the foreseeable future.
The Cardinals franchise played in St. Louis from 1960 through the 1987 season before relocating to Arizona. Eight years later, starting with the 1995 season, the Los Angeles Rams pulled up stakes in Southern California and moved east to plant their flag in St. Louis.
But the Rams are now in the running to take their home games back to the Los Angeles area, with a decision coming as soon as the NFL owners’ meeting in January. With the Rams closing their 2015 campaign with two road games and the playoffs essentially out of the picture for the 5-8 team, the Thursday Night Football showdown with Tampa Bay, Edward Jones Stadium may be hanging out a “vacancy” sign come Friday morning.
Actually, the Rams have not made their home in the Los Angeles City — or County — limits since 1979, when they moved out of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and headed south to Orange County, where they shared Anaheim Stadium with the Angels of Major League Baseball for 15 seasons.
Where, exactly, they would play if they moved back to Los Angeles in 2016 remains up in the air, but the Coliseum is on the list as a temporary home, at least, until a new stadium can be constructed, probably just south of L.A. in Inglewood.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are far less worried about whether or not there will be NFL football in St. Louis next year than about keeping their improbable playoff aspirations alive. Coming into the game at 6-7, Tampa Bay must win on Thursday and also win their following two games — including a season finale against the currently undefeated Carolina Panthers — to have any chance of qualifying for one of the two Wild Card spots, currently occupied by the Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings who have already won eight games each.

But even though both teams are on the extreme margins of the playoff picture, fans will still be treated to a matchup of two of the top rookie performers in the NFL. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are led by the 2015 No. 1 overall draft pick quarterback Jameis Winston who has thrown for 3,059 yards with 18 touchdowns and 11 interceptions so far this season.
The St. Louis Rams offense is keyed by rookie running back Todd Gurley, the 10th overall pick in the draft this year, who comes int the game poised to to pass the 1,000-yard mark, at 975, unless the Buccaneers can figure out some way to bottle him up.
“We did a lot of work on him,” said Tampa Bay Coach Lovie Smith. “He was a special player in college. He’s played that way, come on to the scene quickly and just watching him run – he can do it all. He’s a big back, can run inside the tackles with power and make you miss in the open field with great speed.”
