Australia’s Soundwave festival has officially been canceled. While there was a huge lineup set for the event, these bands are now owed a large sum of money. And here’s the list.
According to Sydney Morning Herald, the Soundwave festival was canceled because the event’s headlining band removed itself from the list. Among other things, one of Soundwave’s alleged bands wasn’t actually confirmed to perform.
The festival’s promoter took to Twitter on December 16, late evening. Soundwave promoter A. J. Maddah mentioned that he was “devastated” that the event had to be canceled. However, due to “poor ticket sales,” it was no longer happening.
Thank you to all the fans, bands and people who supported the event for the last 12 years. i wish we could have ended it on a better note.

Prior to that particular tweet, the Soundwave promoter noted that he was awaiting confirmation from Eventopia/Ticketek. Maddah mentioned that Soundwave couldn’t have the festival without the company’s help. Supposedly, the company backed out of an understanding concerning an advance on ticket sales. For this reason, Music Feeds notes that Soundwave ticket sales might not have been the issue.
“…when you look at the bigger picture, it all seems to have less to do with the number of tickets sold, and more to do with the financial difficulties surrounding festival boss AJ Maddah and his associated businesses reaching a critical mass.”
Likewise, the Soundwave promoter mentioned via Twitter that, “If they had informed us that scheduled funds were cancelled,” they could have made other arrangements.
Essentially here are the brief facts: Eventopia were supposed to give SW a scheduled advance to pay deposits to NOFX and BMTH…

… Their CFO changed her mind and decided not make the advance but didn’t tell anyone. so we (SW & bands) waited and waited for $…

On top of the Soundwave issues from the aforementioned company, Syndey Morning Herald noted that the festival was venue-less in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne, even though they had tickets sold for those areas. With all the setbacks and unforeseen problems, the promoter also mentioned that 2017’s Soundwave festival doesn’t look promising either.

When asked how the ticketing company was allowed the determining cancellation decision, the company responded that the call wasn’t its own. Essentially, Eventopia noted via Twitter, the deciding factor came from A. J. Maddah.
However, as can be seen from Music Feeds, the Soundwave coordinator mentioned that — with the company’s permission — he would gladly upload the correspondence email between the two entities.
Nevertheless, since the promoter didn’t receive an advance, as presumably promised, the Soundwave festival organization owes a staggering amount of money to the bands who were supposed to perform, says Music Feeds. According to the news source, it reads as follows.
