‘Super Smash Bros’: Bayonetta And Corrin Join Cloud As Final Three Fighters, Amiibos Coming Too

A Nintendo Direct livestream presented the final new characters for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Final Fantasy VII‘s Cloud was previously announced and is joined by Bayonetta along with Corrin from Fire Emblem Fates. This includes plans for Amiibos for each of the three new characters.

Cloud from Final Fantasy VII is available to download from the Nintendo eShop for Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS right now. He costs $5.99 for either system or $6.99 for both and comes with the Midgar stage.

A Chocobo hat for Mii fighters was also released along with a Geno Mii Fighter Outfit.

Bayonetta was selected due to her popularity in a poll that asked fans to nominate characters they wanted to see in Super Smash Bros. The sometimes controversial heroine was the top pick in Europe and a top five pick in North America. The total amount of votes worldwide put her ahead of the rest to be “the clear worldwide choice.”

The fighting style employed by Bayonetta in Super Smash Bros. matches the style of play from her namesake games developed by Platinum Games. She is a combo fighter and chains different kinds of attacks together complete with the ability to shoot the four guns equipped on her hands and feet. Bayonetta’s “Wicked Weaves” serve as her smash attack and uses her hair to call in a massive fist to knock opponents around. Her signature move is Witch Time, which slows opponents down if they are within range.

The character comes with two costumes; the long-haired version from the original Bayonetta and the short-haired look from Bayonetta 2.

Nintendo is also adding a new stage based on the Bayonetta games. The exclusive stage is called Umbra Clock Tower and is a recreation from the opening scene in the first title from her series. It features moving platforms along with an alternate world. Songs from both Bayonetta games will be included along with new arrangements.

Nintendo is targeting a February 2016 release date for Bayonetta and her stage. The price is $5.99 when purchased just for the Wii U or Nintendo 3DS and $6.99 when purchased for both.

Corrin from Fire Emblem Fates will also join the roster of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Players can choose to play as a male or female version of the character, like Wii Fit Trainer, Robin, and the Villager.

The blood of a dragon runs through Corrin’s veins allowing him to transform and pull of different attacks. That includes transforming just specific parts of his body. The Dragon Fan side smash attack in particular has a tremendously long reach and does extra damage at the tip of the attack. Corrin can also sprout dragon wings to leap up into the sky and perform attacks.

A special stage was not created for Corrin, but the character does come with new and remixed songs. The lack of a stage gives the Fire Emblem hero a slight discount that makes the cost $4.99 for either the Wii U or Nintendo 3DS or $5.99 for both.

Cloud, Bayonetta, and Corrin will also receive Amiibo figures later in 2016, though a release date has not yet been announced. Nintendo did confirm that Amiibos for Ryu and Roy, along with a Famicom Color version R.O.B., will launch on March 18.

“Mr. Sakurai knows how to go out with a smash,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “With the inclusion of even more surprising characters, stages and costumes, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U cement themselves as two of the most robust fighting games of all time.”
