First Trailer Released For Independence Day: Resurgence [Video]

ComicBook reported that the first trailer has been released for Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel to Independence Day, released in 1996, which starred Will Smith. Most of the characters from the first movie will be in the new one, except for Smith. The above video is the first official trailer for the movie. The trailer promises that the new chapter in the Independence Day world will be as epic as the first one, if not better. The first movie was released almost 20 years ago and was one of the highest grossing box office hits, earning over $800 million. There has been great improvements in 3D technology since the first movie was released, so its possible that IDR might even surpass its predecessor.

As mentioned above, a lot of characters from the first film will be returning. Bill Pullman will be returning as former President Thomas J. Whitmore, who gave the epic, inspiring speech just before everyone thought they were about to be vanquished by the aliens. The new trailer features that same speech, which should still inspire the characters today. Whitmore also says in the trailer that he dreams about them (aliens).

“They are coming back.”

ComicBook also knew “they are coming back.” CB released this great statement about the new movie.

“We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.”

The aliens are coming back and IDR promises to deliver another epic alien fight. Along with Pullman, Jeff Goldblum is returning as David Levinson, the scientist, as well as Judd Hirsch who plays David’s father, Julius. Vivica A. Fox is returning as Jasmine Dubrow, who was a stripper, but she works at a hospital now. Brent Spiner will be also be returning as the strange Dr. Brakish Okun.

At the end of the trailer, Jeff Goldblum asks you to “reflect on all we lost and how far we’ve come” and invites you to view the website, War of 1996. The website is an interactive site that gives you a “fictional experience” and brings you up to date on where the world stands now in IDR since the victory in the first film. If you want to hear Whitmore’s inspirational speech, this is the place to go. “War of 1996” is a must for fans of Independence Day. If you haven’t seen the first film, you will definitely want to see it before you go see IDR.

New actors joining the cast will be Liam Hemsworth, Joey King, Maika Monroe (President Whitmore’s daughter Patricia), William Fichter, and Sela Ward. Ward will be the new American president, President Lanford, a female president. Also, although Smith will not be reprising his role, his son Dylan Hiller will be played by Jessie Usher.

The following video was released a few months ago by Flix Movies and introduces the characters of the Independence Day sequel. The narrator of the video says at the end that the director promises it will be “bigger and badder than the first.” Again, from the official trailer that was released, this seems possible.

What did you think about the official trailer released for IDR? Will you go see the new movie?
