According to the King of Pop’s brother Jermaine Jackson, six-degrees-of-separation made Barack Obama the president of these United States, and it’s all thanks to Michael.

Michael Jackson’s brother Jermaine sat down with the Independent shortly before today’s anniversary of the pop-icon’s death. In the interview, he talked about Michael’s death and the subsequent fallout, remarking that “America has let Michael down,” since his death in 2009. “If he was from any other country they would have erected permanent tributes to him for what he’s done for music.” Jermaine also said that the family still doesn’t have any closure from Michael’s death. For the Jacksons, many questions remain unanswered. “The family still need to know who else came into the house that night. In time we might get answers but there will never be closure.”

Most interestingly, Jermaine claimed that Michael’s influence put President Barack Obama in the White House hot-seat, reports Newser. How? Simple. It all started with Oprah.

In Michael Jackson’s 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey, the singer claimed that he had Vitiligo, a disease the late pop star claimed bleached his skin. According to Jermaine, it was this interview that propelled Oprah to her own eventual fame. With that fame, Oprah threw her support behind then-Senator Barack Obama, which some say helped him secure the Democratic nomination. “Michael invited her [to Neverland] and that was the moment that put her in 90 countries around the world and made her successful. What did she do with that success? She put it behind Obama,” said Jermaine.

Jermaine also blamed British tabloids for destroying his brother’s reputation, and closed by remarking on the sadness surrounding the culture’s acceptance of Michael only after his death. “No one knew Michael like we did. He wasn’t weird or strange he was just different. And it is only since his death that people are finally beginning to truly understand him.”
