What Happened To Katelin Akens? Teen’s Disappearance Is Suspicious

Authorities in Spotsylvania, Virginia, are looking for Katelin Akens. The 19-year-old woman was last seen two days ago when she was supposed to board a flight. WTVR News reports that there are circumstances surrounding her disappearance that are drawing attention. Did something bad happen to this missing teen, or is there an explanation for the circumstances in her case?

Her loved ones have told authorities that they dropped her off at the Franconia-Springfield Metro Station. She was supposed to take the Metro to the Regan National Airport, where she was expected to make a flight. She was expected to return back to college in Arizona at the time of her disappearance.

Spotsylvania County Sheriff Roger Harris released a statement regarding the investigation behind this young woman’s disappearance.

“The circumstances surrounding this case are suspicious enough to warrant our full investigative efforts, in attempting to locate Miss Akens.”

WUSA 9 News reports that as of Monday, luggage belonging to the missing woman has been located. The luggage was reportedly found in a drainage ditch near the city limits of Fredericksburg. The condition of the luggage has not been clarified in media reports, so it hasn’t been confirmed as to whether or not authorities suspect foul play in the disappearance of Katelin Akens. Even though foul play hasn’t been mentioned by authorities, her loved ones are still desperate to find out what happened to her.

Akens is a white female who reportedly stands at approximately 5’4?. She weighs around 122 lbs., with blonde hair and blue eyes. Authorities in Spotsylvania County are asking for any information that may lead to answers in this mysterious disappearance. If you have any information that could prove useful to authorities, please don’t hesitate to call (800) 928-5822.

The reports of this young woman’s bizarre disappearance come on the heels of reports surrounding the strange death of another Spotsylvania County woman. Authorities discovered the body of 21-year-old Heather Ciccone on Monday morning, after the owner of a residence called police to report that a strange vehicle was parked in his driveway. Ciccone’s body was found in the driver’s side seat of her car. She had reportedly died from a gunshot wound to her head in a case that her family is calling murder. However, authorities in Spotsylvania have not confirmed whether her death was a suicide or a homicide.

Authorities in Spotsylvania have also not declared whether or not there are any connections between the death of Heather Ciccone and the disappearance of Katelin Akens. There are no reported connections between these two cases, but very bizarre that two immediately high profile cases involving young women have come out of this region in the same day.

While authorities investigate the strange disappearance of Katelin Akens, it should be noted that the state of Virginia is home to numerous unsolved disappearances. The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System shares that there are approximately 100 cases of unsolved disappearances involving women in Virginia. In fact, numerous women appear to vanish every year in this state, with the exception of 2015. Hopefully, the disappearance of Katelin Akens doesn’t turn out on the growing list of unsolved disappearances.
