Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop Mrkt Shop Robbed

Robbers hit Gwyneth Paltrow’s New York City Goop shop on December 5, making off with tens of thousands of dollars worth of expensive merchandise. Goop sells Paltrow’s “lifestyle range” of items along with “custom-made furniture,” and the shop only opened less than two weeks ago.

People magazine reported that three men allegedly entered the midtown shop, located in Columbus Circle, and made off with approximately $173,00 dollars worth of merchandise. NYPD police confirmed that three men entered the Goop Mrkt shop on Saturday and used “an unknown object” to force open a cabinet full of merchandise. They took the goods and left the store. Though staff witnessed the robbery taking place and called 9-1-1, the thieves were able to make their escape before police arrived on the scene.

A Goop spokesperson said the thieves took a “very limited number of items.” The spokesperson when on to assure the public that Goop’s “customers and staff are safe,” and that “the NYPD responded quickly.”

“While the store was crowded during one of our busiest days, thankfully the NYPD responded quickly, our customers and staff are safe, and we remain open for business with proper security precautions in place.”

Daily Mail Online reports that the NYPD has not disclosed the number of items stolen, but initially reported only $17,000 dollars worth of merchandise had been taken. An NYPD spokesman has since corrected that information. The spokesman said the initial estimated of value was much lower than the actual value of the stolen goods because they found new information as the investigation “changed over the course of the inquiry.” The spokesman said that this was because the investigation is still in the “opening stages.”

The robbery came just two weeks after the New York City debut of Goop, which previously had locations in Dallas, Chicago and Los Angeles. Paltrow attended the opening of the shop, branded “Goop Mrkt,” on the November 23, alongside Goop’s COO, Lisa Gersh.

The Goop shop’s opening coincided with the release of a 25-piece fashion set, which Paltrow had collaborated with fellow fashion enthusiasts to create. Pierpaolo Piccilio, one of the collaborators on the set, told New York Times that Goop Mrkt’s range is, “High and low together,” and that Goop is “quite democratic.”

Paltrow told the New York Times that she had been inspired by Wonder Woman, who is featured in the store, because Paltrow believes that “the modern woman is a wonder woman.” Collaborators on the project include Pierpaolo and Maria Grazia Chiuri. No reports on whether or not the stolen items are part of the Wonder Woman collection have been made.

There were plenty of other high-end, expensive items to steal from Goop, including leather jackets for $10,500, tulle dresses for $8,900 and the relatively inexpensive leather bracelets that only cost $275. Paltrow’s Goop Gift Guide includes over-the-top luxury items such as “$956 toilet paper, $125,000 gold dumbbells, and a $90,000 trip ‘to the edge of space.'”

One Twitter user, commenting on the high prices at Goop, suggested that the $173,000 might have only covered two vests and a scented candle.

A Goop spokesperson said that the pop-up shop was filled with customers at the time of the robbery because Saturday is one of Goop’s “busiest days.” Goop Mrkt won’t be closing as a result of the robbery. They plan to stay open until December 24, as originally planned.

“‘While the store was crowded during one of our busiest days, thankfully the NYPD responded quickly, our customers and staff are safe, and we remain open for business with proper security precautions in place.”

The thieves, when caught, will face charges that include grand larceny.
