Maksim Chmerkovskiy And Peta Murgatroyd Engaged: See The Public Proposal For The ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Couple

Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd have had an on-again, off-again relationship for more than three years, but now they’re on for good.

The Dancing With The Stars pros announced they are getting married, with Maks popping the question on stage at the Olympia Theater in Miami.

“I’m in love with you, and I will be in love with you for the rest of my life,” Maksim said as he got down one one knee in front of everyone.

As if the public proposal wasn’t enough, both Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd took to Instagram to share the news with fans. Murgatroyd wrote, “I said yes!!!!!! You have my heart forever my love. Love always wins.”

The proposal shows just how far Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta have come. The couple started dating in 2012 but split a number of times. Maks also had a reputation as something of a playboy, being connected to Jennifer Lopez and Kate Upton.

But sources said all the time, through the ups and downs, Peta was always the love of Maksim’s life.

“They’ve never really ‘broken up,'” a Dancing with the Stars source told People magazine back in January. “They’re with each other a lot and have been for quite some time, including all last season. Tommy [Chong] would tease her about it.”

The source said that Maksim wasn’t big on labels, and that Peta “couldn’t care less about making things official or being called his girlfriend.”

But ironically, at the time the source said Maks was not big on public displays of affection.

“After some of the more serious commitments Maks made in the past, he’s not looking to make any big announcements or labels about things,” says the source. “But Peta is his girl and he’s never stopped wanting to be around her.”

That seemed to be out the window when it came time to propose.

But even if they were not the most solid of couples, source said they believed Maks and Peta were built to last.

“She’s had a crush on him for a long time,” a source told People magazine when the first got together in 2012. “They are really great together. And he is very happy.”

“It’s early but I think this will last,” adds another source. “They’re a good match, a good couple. She says they’re not dating but they are. Everyone knows it.”

But Peta also put in plenty of work to get to this point. Back in early 2014 during one of their break-ups, Peta reportedly made it her mission to win him back, and even became closer with his brother Val Chmerkovskiy in order to create closer connection.

She was also linked to her then-partner James Maslow, which insiders said was just a ploy to make Maks jealous. A source told Radar Online that the relationship was entirely fake, and that Maks knew it at the time. But the source said Maks didn’t really care and was “simply over Peta,” though somewhere along the line that ended up changing. They were back together within a matter of months.

They have been good for the past few months, with insiders saying they were moving steadily toward marriage.

The proposal wasn’t the only thing made public for Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd. The couple made another appearance on Sunday, with People magazine catching up with them and getting a glimpse of Peta’s ring.
