Paul Ryan, the Wisconsin GOP congressman, is apparently among those being thoroughly checked out by the Mitt Romney campaign team to possibly be the former Massachusetts governor’s running mate in the 2012 presidential election.

National Review Online’s Robert Costa filed this report which has been picked up by many media outlets:

I’m reliably informed that Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the Budget Committee chairman, has submitted paperwork to the Romney campaign. Sources confirm that he is being vetted for the vice-presidential nomination.

Ryan, one of the GOP’s brightest young stars, is clearly a favorite of Romney allies. But some top Republican officials are wary of plucking him from the House, where he is the party’s most influential voice on fiscal issues.

Among other things, vetting usually involves providing extensive financial information and completing forms that ask detailed questions about the would-be VP’s professional and personal background. The last thing a presidential campaign wants is to wind up being stuck with a running mate who has any skeletons in the closet.

As The Inquisitr has previously reported, Gov.  Romney and a cast of vice presidential hopefuls including Paul Ryan (but not including Florida Senator Marco Rubio) will be spending the weekend together at the Chateaux in Park City, Utah. Romney, the campaign’s top donors and possible running mates will be participating in panel discussion and meetings.

Most grassroots activists overwhelmingly prefer Sen. Rubio for VP, however.

Paul Ryan, 42,  has represented Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional district since 1999 and is the chair of the House Budget Committee, where he is the architect of the Republican Party’s long-term budget proposals.
