There’s one thing that critics agree on about Pixar’s latest animated film Brave: It’s beautiful. Other than that, critics can’t seem to decide if Brave is another classic film in a long line of classic film’s for Pixar, or if it falls short of the extremely high benchmark that the studio has set with movies like Toy Story and Monsters Inc. 

And that seems to be the main complaint with Brave. It’s a great movie, but it’s not a great movie by Pixar standards.

Tom Long at Detroit News writes: “Brave isn’t a bull’s-eye, but it’s close enough.”

The Newark Star Ledger writes: “The Pixar name used to mean something. And it never quite meant pleasantly safe, safely forgettable movies like this.”

The Globe and Mail writes: “What we get would be fine from another studio, but too safe and familiar for Pixar.”

Television Without Pity writes: “When judged against Pixar’s absurdly high standards, Brave doesn’t fully measure up to the studio’s best work.”

Brave features Pixar’s first lead female character and several people thought that the movie would be groundbreaking. Unfortunately, most critics were disappointed to see the female lead, a princess, struggling with a decision about marriage.

Despite the less-than-enthused critics, Brave is bound to be a commercial success for Pixar. Reuters reports that Brave is expected to bring on track to bring in $55 million and $60 million at the box office this weekend. This would give Pixar it’s 13th consecutive No. 1 debut.
