Mom Mel Rymill Shares Photo In Granny Panties And Nursing Bra To Stand Up To Body Shamers

A mother from Australia isn’t letting anyone get her down about her post-baby body!

Mel Rymill recently decided to meet with a personal trainer in order to regain her core strength and endurance. However, when Mel’s trainer first saw her, all she was concerned with was getting her back to her pre-baby weight. Mel said her personal trainer’s reaction made her angry and led her to post a risky photo on Facebook.

In the photo, which Mel shared on Facebook November 19, she can be seen standing in her bedroom wearing nothing but a nursing bra and a pair of “granny panties.” Her body isn’t perfect, her hair isn’t fixed, and she isn’t wearing any makeup. However, Mel thought the world should see what a strong and healthy woman looks like and decided to share the photo anyway.

She went on to explain the misconstrued perceptions of women and how women are always criticized over their bodies, whether they are too skinny or overweight. Mel wants to change the way people look at women, explaining that there is more to a woman that her figure.

“It got me thinking,” Mel wrote. “Post pregnant women are told they look good if they return to their pre-baby body quickly leading to the assumption that they look bad if the keep the extra weight. Skinny people are envied for their lack of fat or shamed for apparently starving themselves. Voluptuous women are either labelled fat and shamed or they’re labelled brave for being comfortable in their own skin. There is always pressure.”

“No one is comfortable in their own skin 100% of the time. Constantly labeling people and piling expectations associated with these labels on them is harmful to everyone…including those doing the labeling,” Mel continued. “What we should be worrying about is if people are okay, not what they look like.”

Mel concluded her post by slamming the body shamers, explaining that she is happy with the way she looks, even if other people may not think she has the perfect body.

“So here I am. I may not be magazine ready, my nana undies and bedtime nursing bra are certainly not going to be rocking a runway anytime soon, my hair is greasy, I have no makeup on, my body is squishy and plentiful, I’m not even sure I’m totally okay. But I am strong. My body is healthy. Hell, I am bad*** as f***! Screw what society wants from me. This is what’s on offer.”

Mel has now started a body-confidence movement using the hashtag #badassundies. Her original post has now garnered nearly 9,000 views and nearly 200 likes, and other social media users are taking after Mel and posting photos that highlight their imperfections.

“I am REALLY stepping out here of my comfort zone, im not ready!! This is support ?#?badassundies?,” Facebook user Jennifer L Feece captioned a photo of her wearing her bra and panties.

“I’m overweight, have MS. Former size 10/11. In menopause I’m comfortable in my own skin #badassundies,” J Jamieson tweeted along with a photo of her panties photo.

Mel’s post has since gone viral, and during an interview with Today, she explained why she posted the photo in the first place.

“It was really a spur of a moment thing,” she said. “I looked in the mirror and started getting down on myself before snapping out of it and remembering that my body is amazing. It allows me to do amazing things.”
