Matthew Jackson: Man Buys Groceries For Stranger, Then The Unthinkable Happened One Day After His Good Deed

One man’s good deed for a stranger was followed by an unthinkable tragedy. Now, the woman he blessed wants the world to know of his legacy even though she only interacted with him for brief moments. According to the Daily Mail, Jamie-Lynne Knighten met 28-year-old Matthew Jackson while shopping in Trader Joe’s. The store run was relatively typical until she got to the register and prepared to pay for her groceries.

It has been reported that her credit card declined at the register. As her 5-month-old baby wailed in frustration, she struggled to contact her credit card company for clarity about the declined purchase.

“[My baby] just wasn’t having it… By the time we got to the check-out, I was done.”

Although she had no idea why the card declined at the time of the purchase, she later learned that the card company had put a hold on her account due to speculation of fraud. She’d just returned from traveling abroad and due to the seemingly unusual purchases, there was a hold placed on the card account. But, luckily for Jamie-Lynn, she didn’t have to wait for an explanation from the card company because someone intervened on her behalf and asked to cover the $200 purchase, and that person was Matthew Jackson.

He reportedly asked her could he cover the cost of her groceries, and she initially declined. But, a persistent Matthew Jackson didn’t waver in well-doing. So, Jamie-Lynn eventually accepted his offer. Matthew paid for her groceries and informed Jamie-Lynn of the one condition he had for the good deed. He asked her to pay it forward for someone else in need one day.

During their brief conversation which mostly consisted of small talk, Matthew also told Jamie he was employed at a local LA Fitness. The following week, Jaime-Lynn found herself still thinking about Matthews’ act of kindness. So, she decided to call and speak with the manager, Angela Lavinder, to compliment him. But instead, she received shocking news and learned the unthinkable had happened to him. Lavinder reportedly began crying almost immediately after hearing Jamie-Lynn say how amazing of a person Matthew was. That’s when she learned of his death.

“She said it was Matt and my heart just dropped because he had just passed away. It broke my heart because — what a beautiful person.”

According to the L.A. Times, Matthew Jackson was killed in a car accident on November 11, less than 24 hours after the good deed he’d done for Jamie-Lynn Knighten. Needless to say, Jamie-Lynn was devastated. But, even in the midst of mourning the sudden loss of the man she only met for a few minutes, she wants the world to know who he was and how he impacted her life.

Jamie-Lynn has created a Facebook page and Twitter account called Matthew’s Legacy to commemorate the life of the amazing person she met. On Wednesday, November 25, Matthew Jackson’s mother, LeeAnn Krymow, released a statement about her son. She also echoed Jamie-Lynn’s sentiments about Matthew’s legacy, as he would want the world to continue doing good deeds for the betterment of others.

“I knew my boy was like this,” Krymow said. “He loved to be kind. He was just a really special kid. So cute, so intelligent, so talented, an accomplished musician. You wonder why these things happen. There has got to be some good to come of this,” she said. “He would be happy to know that other people are learning from his example.”
