Rumors Of Hit Show ‘Dexter’ Returning Proven False

Recent rumors of the hit Showtime show Dexter returning for its ninth season have been proven false, at least for now.

Speculations that Dexter, a show about a serial killer who only takes out the bad people and criminal element, seems to have started after a Twitter profile for the show posted a picture of the star of the show, Michael C. Hall, carving a turkey. Although the photo only wishes people a Happy Thanksgiving, it was enough for many fans who miss the loveable blood spatter analyst to hope that it meant the show would be revived.

Yet, Showtime, the network that created the show, hasn’t confirmed that a new Dexter is on the way, although the president of Showtime, David Nevins, stated earlier this year that he’d definitely consider a Dexter spinoff, but only if Michael C. Hall was on board.

“It would have to involve Michael. I would only do it with Michael … It remains to be seen if they’re going to want to do it, if I’m going to want to do it. If we were to do it, I would want to do Dexter in a new concept and configuration. I would want the show to feel different and not just be a continuation of the old show.”

One of the problems, however, is that Hall is busy with the New York Theater Workshop production of David Bowie’s Lazarus. Hall stars as Bowie himself, and the reception from its November 18 preview was so positive that it’s now difficult to score tickets for the play, which has its opening night on December 7. Hall also just wrapped up the film Christine, an indie drama about a suicidal journalist, slated for release in 2016.

Even without a busy schedule, if his thoughts during an interview in 2014 with IGN still stand, Hall simply isn’t interested in revisiting his career as Dexter, despite its massive success. Yet, the actor did indicate that it’s not totally out of the question, as long as the material for a new show is interesting enough.

“It’s very difficult for me to imagine someone coming up with something that is compelling enough for that to be worth doing. I certainly have no interest right now in playing Dexter. You know, some time passes and somebody has some newly imagined landscape for him that I feel is worth exploring, I would perhaps consider it.”

Perhaps one of the biggest reasons fans are so intent on seeing a new Dexter is due to the show’s season finale, which has been hailed by many critics as one of the worst endings to a series ever. Dexter’s ending, which was considered strange at best, left viewers without a sense of closure.

Hall understood the disappointment, especially since millions of fans followed Dexter for eight seasons. The actor agreed that viewers probably wanted a much better ending than what the last episode of the show offered.

“Maybe some people wanted a more satisfying—maybe they wanted a happy ending for him, either a happy ending or a more definitive sense of closure.”

In the meantime, fans are not giving up on the possibility of bringing the show back to life. The Inquisitr reports that an online petition was recently started on AVAAZ.org, asking other fans to sign and help bring Dexter back for a ninth season. The petition currently has a little over 1,000 of its 100,000 signatures goal.

For those who haven’t watched Dexter or for those of you who want to relive his most gory killings, the entire season is currently available on both Showtime and Netflix to subscribers.
