New Hampshire Union Leader Endorses Chris Christie For President

Chris Christie is running a struggling campaign. He recently was demoted from the primetime GOP debate to the earlier, low-polling debate. The Governor of New Jersey received a much-needed endorsement from the New Hampshire Union Leader.

In the article that gave the newspaper’s support to Christie, Joseph W. McQuaid, publisher of the New Hampshire Union Leader, said that Christie has shown great leadership skills already.

The article also took a jab at the freshman Senators in the race. There are three first-term Senators running for the Republican nomination: Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, and Ted Cruz. The New Hampshire Union Leader suggested that the Senators in the race don’t have the necessary experience to be president of the United States.

The paper made the comparison of President Obama to the GOP Senators and said Obama had a disastrous effect on America.

“We don’t need another fast-talking, well-meaning freshman U.S. senator trying to run the government. We are still seeing the disastrous effects of the last such choice.”

McQuaid wrote that Gov. Christie knows how to deal with terrorists and cope with disasters.

“He has prosecuted terrorists and dealt admirably with major disasters. But the one reason he may be best-suited to lead during these times is because he tells it like it is and isn’t shy about it.”

The recent terrorist attacks in Paris, France, which claimed the lives of 130 people, have made the threat of a terrorism in the U.S. a very real fear for many. Several of the candidates running for the White House have given their ideas for how to protect against terrorism.

Chris Christie has been talking about terrorism counter-measures on the campaign trail since well before the Paris attacks.

In the first GOP debate, Gov. Christie sparred with Sen. Rand Paul over government surveillance. Senator Paul argued that the Fourth Amendment should be used to catch terrorists. He made the point that individual search warrants should be granted rather than indiscriminate dragnet surveillance. Christie, on the other hand, argued that it is too difficult to get individual warrants and that the only way to catch terrorists is to use the large-scale surveillance techniques.

Other GOP candidates have had some controversial ideas of how to prevent a terrorist attack in the homeland. Donald Trump, who still remains the GOP frontrunner, suggested that creating a database to track Muslims in the United States might be a good idea. He also said that some mosques should be under surveillance.

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson made similar comments to Trump’s in relation to the Paris attacks. As the Washington Post reported, Carson said that he wants a database that doesn’t just target Muslims.

“I think we should have a database on everybody who comes into this country.”

Following those comments about U.S. Muslims, Trump saw a huge drop in support in one Reuters poll. Though the drop in support isn’t necessarily because of his comments on Muslims. The billionaire business man dropped an astonishing 12 points in that Reuters poll. It is worth noting that Mr. Trump still has a lead in most other recent polls.

At this point in the race, Governor Christie becoming the Republican nominee does seem unlikely. In a recent ABC/Washington Post poll, Chris Christie is at 2 percent. In a recent Fox News poll, the governor is at 3 percent.

The current lack of support for the Governor of New Jersey means that Christie has a tough road ahead. Recovering from low numbers this late in the race and climbing in the polls is not an easy feat.
