NFL Rumors Round-Up: News About Johnny Manziel, Danny Amendola And Kyle Williams, Plus More

NFL news and rumors are popping up all the time and here is the latest on Johnny Manziel, Danny Amendola and Kyle Williams.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel has been demoted to third-string quarterback after lying to the organization about photos of him partying surfaced and, according to Yahoo Sports, he may not dress for Monday night’s game against Baltimore.

“I haven’t done the worksheet yet, but that always comes down to projected health, where we are at other positions,” Browns coach Mike Pettine said. ”So I haven’t made that decision yet.”

Josh McCown is slated to get the start for the Browns (2-8) against the Ravens with Austin Davis backing him up. Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports despite Manziel’s demotion he still has the support of Browns offensive coordinator John DeFilippo, who believes that Manziel could step on to the field again this season.

“I like what I’ve seen. I really do,” DeFilippo said. “Even the jump he made from the Cincinnati game to the Pittsburgh game was a huge jump. I think we’d all agree on that. I think Johnny has played enough football where we know what we have in him.”

“As we all know, a six-game season in the NFL is a long stretch — a very long stretch. We’re a long way from the end of the season. You don’t close doors on anything. You never say never in this profession. To say that Johnny Manziel will not play again this season, I’m not ready to say that.”

DeFilippo added that he still considers Manziel a “franchise” quarterback.

Manziel has appeared in six games this year, completing 59.7 percent of his passes for 933 yards and five touchdowns. He has thrown two interceptions and lost five fumbles. Manziel also has rushed for 90 yards on 17 carries. Manziel is 1-2 as a starter this year.

In other NFL news, defensive tackle Kyle Williams was placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury by the Buffalo Bills according to the Buffalo News. Williams is expected to undergo surgery in the near future to repair a “meniscal issue” that never really healed enough that he could return.

Williams originally suffered the injury in a 34-21 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals (Oct. 18) and was hopeful he could put off surgery until after the season. However, after 5 1/2 weeks Williams realized he was far from being football ready and therefore opted for surgery now.

Prior to getting injured, the 6-foot-1, 303-pounder was playing well as he clogged the middle. Williams finished with 14 tackles and one sack.

Following the procedure, Williams will rehab which he expects to “last few month.” Williams plans on returning next year but the question is will it be with the Bills? Buffalo could clear $5 million in cap space by releasing Williams. The 10-year pro has 471 tackles and 35.5 sacks in his career.

New England Patriots will be without wide receiver Danny Amendola, due to a knee injury, as they attempt to move to 11-0 on the season against Denver on Sunday, per Mike Reiss of ESPN. The Patriots will also be without No.1 wide out Julian Edelman (foot injury) and No. 4 wide receiver Aaron Dobson was placed IR on Thursday. Furthermore, four-year pro Keshawn Martin has been out the previous four weeks with a hamstring injury and listed as questionable for the game. Meaning that the Patriots could have only two healthy receivers for the game: veteran Brandon LaFell and undrafted free agent Chris Harper.

Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reports (via video) that the San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula’s fate may not have anything to do with wins or losses but to how well some of the 49ers’ young players progress over the final six games. The 49ers are currently 3-7 on the season.

The Dallas Cowboys are 3-8 on the season but 0-7 in games started by some other quarterback than Tony Romo. Romo is out for the season after re-fracturing his left clavicle, meaning Matt Cassel will be under center. Cassel has under-performed so far in his appearances with the team, completing 63.0 percent of his passes for 902 yards (170.0 yards per game) and five touchdowns to go along with five interceptions.

49ers second year running back Carlos Hyde (foot injury) will miss his fourth game as he has been ruled out of the team’s game against Arizona (8-2) on Sunday. Hyde is a candidate for season-ending surgery, per Maiocco.

The Baltimore Ravens made several moves on Friday. The Ravens placed RB Justin Forsett on injured reserved and activated DE Brent Urban. They also signed G Marcel Jones to the practice squad and released WR Daniel Brown from the squad in a corresponding move, via Baltimore Ravens twitter.

Matt Vensel of the Star Tribune wrote that one of the Minnesota Vikings priorities this offseason will be re-signing veteran offensive lineman Joe Berger. Berger rated by Pro Football Focus as one of the league’s top centers this year is filling in for John Sullivan, who has been sidelined all year. Having played every offensive snap for the club this season, Berger is on track to earn an extra $400,000 in incentives.

The Vikings (7-3) have ruled out free safety Harrison Smith and rookie corner Trae Waynes for their tilt with the Atlanta Falcons (6-4) on Sunday.
