Arrow’s Nyssa Al Ghul Actress Katrina Law Discusses Female Ra’s Al Ghul, Malcolm Merlyn, And Stunts

Arrow Season 3 was all about the League of Assassins, and the big bad of its season, Ra’s Al Ghul. For those who are still behind on Arrow, spoilers are coming up next. Ra’s Al Ghul’s daughter Nyssa was a large part the show since Season 2. Even though Nyssa Al Ghul had a lot of love lost for her father, she certainly did not take too kindly to his passing, and Malcolm Merlyn’s anointing as the current Ra’s Al Ghul. Arrow Season 4 has not had much Nyssa Al Ghul in it so far, but what little it has, shows the intense friction between Nyssa and Malcolm. According to Comicbook, Arrow actress Katrina Law (Nyssa Al Ghul) sees a potential future in the idea of a female Ra’s Al Ghul.

“As far as Nyssa is concerned, yeah, and very soon. That’s what she wants for sure. I don’t know if that’s what the writers are thinking but in Nyssa’s mind, it’s happening!”

Naturally, if Nyssa were to ascend to the role of Ra’s Al Ghul, the question of why she would desire the role and what her motivations behind obtaining it. Katrina Law likened it to “leaving family land to a corporation.”

“It is to fulfill the legacy but it’s her rightful place. She was born and essentially told from birth that that’s what she was born to be… To become Ra’s Al Ghul, eventually. So, when it’s ingrained in your head that this is your rightful place, that you’re your father’s successor, then essentially it’s almost like leaving family land to a corporation. It’s like, ‘No, this is my land, I have to fight for what is rightfully mine.'”

The potential match-up between Malcolm Merlyn and Nyssa Al Ghul does not seem all too certain, as Law responded that she “hopes so” to the idea of an Arrow Season 4 showdown. Though, presumably, that might be the only way that Nyssa would be able to become a female Ra’s Al Ghul. Katrina Law was asked whether she did her own stunts, as many Arrow fans know that Stephen Amell does a lot of his. Though Law said that she has done her own stunts in the past, Arrow is a little different.

“When I was on Spartacus, I did 100% of my own stunts but I also wasn’t jumping off of high buildings or falling on silk ribbons or jumping off of cars onto other moving cars. I wasn’t doing anything too crazy. On Arrow, they have a lot of stunts where they go, “Now, you slide down this rope, run down that bridge, land on a car, take out four assassins on the way down, throw these tiny stars, catch the ones being thrown at you, and…” Yeah. I’m like, “You know, she’s trained for this and probably won’t fall on her face doing it,” so I’m very happy to give up my power to Atlas. She makes me look good. She’s talented. She’s amazing but then too, they are very kind with the scenes that I can do, which is the hand to hand combat or just the minor sword play. They just tell you to go at it.”

When asked if Nyssa Al Ghul would support Team Arrow, “if” she became the next Ra’s Al Ghul, she said “When.”

She described Nyssa’s feelings about Team Arrow as a “soft spot” because of Sara and Laurel, so she would most likely aid them if it was absolutely necessary. Though, Nyssa Al Ghul would still hold League of Assassin business over all else. Speaking of the League of Assassins, what are they doing these days? Under the last Ra’s, or the Batman Returns iteration, they were pretty busy. It makes an Arrow fan wonder.
