Doo Doo The Clown Breaks Stereotype, Rescues Two Women

There’s no clowning around here: the latest hero in Toronto, Canada, is a clown.

Doo Doo the Clown, perhaps best known for his role in Adam Sandler’s movie, Billy Madison, was driving home from an event with two other clowns in his car when he saw a man attack two women near Bathurst Street and Front Street West on November 22, according to CBC News. The man punched one of the women in the head, and that’s when Doo Doo the Clown left the stereotype of clowns being scary behind.

According to the Star, Doo Doo, aka Shane Farberman, initially encountered the man jumping on cars near Front and Portland Streets and called 911.

Doo Doo the Clown said that “He was out to get whoever he could. He was walking on cars and punching things.”

He began to follow the man in his black Hummer with his two clown colleagues, one of whom was pregnant, in the back. When Doo Doo the Clown saw the man take a swipe at the women, he jumped into action.

It was only later that he realized how odd the moment must have been for the women.

“[They’re] looking at a black hummer, and a clown screaming ‘Get in! Get in!’ ” Farberman said.

However, with a man trying to chase them down, the women were not about to give the clown’s offer of shelter second thought. The Star reported that the two women squeezed into the vehicle with Farberman’s clown colleagues almost immediately, and then the man began to chase them.

The incident was captured on Doo Doo the Clown’s dash cam, which has since been turned over to the police. Coincidentally, the dash cam had been a gift from Farberman’s son a week earlier. According to the Star, a CityNews crew had arrived on scene and snagged the footage just prior to it being given to the police, and news of Doo Doo the Clown’s bravery soon went viral.

Farberman, however, had been unaware until November 23 about the scope of the coverage that his bravery had gotten. He told the Star that he awoke that day to check his email and was stunned to see that there had been 12,000 emails, commending him for his bravery in rescuing the two women.

The accolades didn’t stop there, however. Doo Doo the Clown was honored by the City of Toronto for his bravery, with the honors being passed to him by Councillor Norm Kelly. Not only did the famous clown receive a scroll honoring his courage, he also was the guest of honor at a reception November 23.

“You give an additional definition to the word clown. You weren’t clowning around. You were acting decisively and bravely,” Kelly said during the ceremony.

Doo Doo the Clown said that he simply believes that people should look out for each other, and he added that he does not view what he did for the women as particularly heroic.

“If you watch the video, you see how terrified we were … I’m very humbled,” he said.

The clown told CityNews that he was relieved he was able to help the two women — he said that the attacker had to be held down by eight police officers. According to Huffington Post, at one point after the women got into the car, the attacker put his foot up on the car door and pulled the mirror off.

However, Doo Doo the Clown noted that he was not one to get involved in fights, preferring his role as entertainer over brawler. He has been a clown for 32 years.

“I could hand him a balloon,” he said.

The man who attacked the literal clown car is currently in police custody; charges are pending.
