Demi Lovato And Wilmer Valderrama’s Relationship Shines At This Year’s AMA’s

Pop singer and songwriter Demi Lovato has entered a new phase of her career in 2015, with the release of her fifth album, Confident. After her performance during the 2015 American Music Awards, Demi cozying up to her long-time boyfriend, actor Wilmer Valderrama, has everyone talking. Though the couple is not big on PDA, Bustle reports that the two have actually been dating for five years.

I wish I could put into words how grateful I am for this man right here. But my love has grown to a level that words could never possibly express how much this man completes me. He’s loved me the way I never thought I deserved to be loved and with this day marking my 3rd year sober… After sharing my ups, putting up with my downs and supporting my recovery… he still never takes credit and I want the world to know how incredible his soul is. The length of their relationship has certainly surprised many people. An Instagram photo posted on Demi Lovato’s account showed the two looking very cute together and it caused quite a stir. They went through a very brief separation period in 2012, but the couple has remained strong ever since. Lovato posted a picture of her kissing her man in March of 2015, marking the singer’s third year of sobriety. In a very loving caption, she acknowledges how important he has been during some dark periods of her life, particularly when dealing with substance abuse and an eating disorder. “I really wouldn’t be alive today without him,” she says. Talking with People just a few months ago, the 23-year-old discusses her struggle to keep her life together and notes that Valderrama was willing to ride it out with her.

“People say that relapses happen before you use. Your mind starts setting up the relapse before you take that drink or that first hit. The times we’d broken up, I had already gone to that place of, ‘Yeah, this is what’s happening.’ I didn’t realize it at the time, but I just wanted to sabotage everything around me so that I could sabotage myself. People told him, ‘You should probably leave. She’s on a spiral, and you’re going to be sucked down with it. But he was like, ‘I’m not leaving. This is somebody I really care about.'”

As Gwen Stefani was on stage performing “Used To Love You” at the AMA’s, Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama were seen holding hands. Though it is a simple gesture that millions of couples everywhere engage in, knowing what the two have been through together makes the moment much more meaningful.

The former That 70s Show cast member doesn’t even let Demi’s exes get in the way of their loving relationship. The “Cool for the Summer” singer was once in a relationship with Jonas brothers member Joe Jonas, and Valderrama maintains a healthy and positive friendship with him, which came as a complete surprise for Demi in the beginning. The couple have become more comfortable sharing cute photos of themelves together on social media within the last year. They first met in 2010 at a shoot for Voto Latino, an organization that “empowers Latino Millennials to claim a better future for themselves and their community.”

Demi Lovato’s fifth album, Confident, was released on October 16 of this year and debuted on the U.S. Billboard 200 at number two. It sold 98,000 units during its first week of release.
