‘Fallout 4’ Script Extender Is Now Out And Does What Bethesda’s Creation Kit Can’t

Fallout 4 modders can now rejoice, according to Silicon Angle, as the Script Extender or F4SE is now available. This is the first build of the extender, version 0.1.1. It will be rather helpful in utilizing the already foreseen mods in need of assistance as some of them can be rather complex.

Bethesda Forums user, behippo, mentioned that with this tool it will give a PC modder the ability to “expand the scripting capabilities of Fallout 4.” He also mentioned that the extender will give the user the ability to make this possible without modifying the existing executable files.

That being said, Silicon Angle mentions that even though Bethesda’s Creation Kit for modding will be available early next year, it won’t have the ability like that of the Fallout 4 Script Extender to provide additional things beyond the base game. Since this is also its first release, the abilities are rather limited. It’s available for download at f4se.silverlock.org. It was expressed on the download site that the script extender is only intended be used on the version of Fallout 4 found on Steam.

As far as the Creation Kit for PC modding as well as modding across console platforms such as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, according to Tech Times, Pete Hines, marketing director at Bethesda, feels that it’s a “big deal” to move modding from the PC realm to the console gaming platforms.

“[Modding is] something we’ve always supported, with all the Bethesda Game Studios titles.”

It was also mentioned by Hines that it was always Fallout 4 game director Todd Howard’s objective to make this happen. The Xbox One is said to be getting their mods first, followed by PlayStation 4 shortly thereafter. The method by which the console receives its mods will be the same method in which DLCs (downloadable content) are installed.

Fallout 4 isn’t the first game given such an extender for the purpose of modding. According to Destructoid, Skyrim, Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Oblivion have all been subject to the script extender. With that said, this allows the ability for the creation of deeply involved mods as opposed to what Bethesda can support.

Players have already begun creating their own custom mods for Fallout 4 and have been toying with all aspects of game, including a disturbingly overdone facial animation mod. They are rather cartoon-y in nature and one can’t but help to crack a smile when looking at their highly expressive faces, according to NexusMods.

Though the previous mod is quite amusing, the next one is rather useful for those Fallout 4 players who would like to improve their frame rate during game play. The cost to this improvement is lowering the quality of resolution of textures. Specifically, VG 24/7 mentions that textures of vegetation, vanilla, and ground — all of which have considerable resolution dimensions — are difficult to deal with.

“Vanilla textures are HUGE 2048×2048 (2k) ground textures and 1024×1024 plant textures and so on (for example) most people cannot handle this.”

Tech Times talks about another mod entailing character dialogue, mentioning that even though the modifications to do this are available in the text files, it’s a wonder why this method wasn’t chosen in Fallout 4. Basically, it gives the player a menu of text of what your character is about to say. That way, it makes it easier to chose the path to take when interacting with NPCs. The mod also gives a nostalgic, Fallout: New Vegas sense to it, allowing for some familiarity and probably resulting in an improved comfort level.

So, what kind of mods do you envision creating for Fallout 4 when the script extender comes out? For those with consoles, what kind of creativity do you intend on putting into modding Fallout 4 your Xbox One or PlayStation 4?
