Peter Gold Shooting: Cops Identify Suspect, Offer $12K For Capture [Video]

New Orleans police identified the man suspected of critically injuring Peter Gold, a Tulane University medical student who was shot in the stomach while trying to help a young woman being dragged at gunpoint on Friday, at around 4 a.m.

ABC News reports that authorities named Euric Cain, 21, as the suspect in the shooting after viewing surveillance footage of the incident in which the suspect is seen shooting Gold in the abdomen. The suspect then attempted to shoot the medical student in the head two times, but his gun jammed. The suspect then fled the scene with the woman’s purse, leaving Gold lying in the street in life-threatening condition.

Authorities warn that not only will they catch Cain, but anyone found aiding the suspect in any way will also face charges. Today, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu revealed that Cain will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

“We’re going to find you, we’re going to prosecute you, and you’re going to spend the rest of your life behind bars.”

To make good on the promise, authorities are offering a $12,500 reward to anyone who helps them find Cain, who faces charges of armed robbery, attempted first-degree murder, and second-degree kidnapping.

New Orleans Police Chief Michael Harrison indicates that Cain has a past criminal history that includes weapons charges, stolen vehicle charges, and a stolen cellphone charge.

“It is clear this is a dangerous individual who doesn’t value the lives of others.”

The woman who Cain attempted to kidnap is unharmed and working with police, providing as much information as possible. Gold, however, is fighting for his life in the critical care unit of a hospital. His family indicates that although his condition is still life-threatening, Gold continues to improve.

Tulane University president Michael Fitts describes Gold as “an outstanding student who represents the best of Tulane in every possible way.” The school donated $10,000 to the reward fund and offered to send prayers out to Gold’s friends and family.

Meanwhile, the nation is touting Gold as a hero after driving his vehicle the wrong way down a one-way street to help the woman he saw being dragged against her will. Gold didn’t know the victim, but he laid his life on the line to stop her from being harmed after he saw the suspect pulling her to his SUV. According to Officer Harrison, that was an act of true heroism.

“There’s no greater selfless act than to stop and help someone perhaps who you don’t know, for reasons you don’t know.”

Cain reportedly posted on Facebook three hours before the shooting took place. The suspect bragged about making it to age 21 while thanking his mother for raising him without his father around. On November 4, the suspect took to Facebook to leave a cryptic message stating he’s “back to the money.”

“Real talk I was thinking I need one f**k it I made it to c 21 with out a f**k ni**a my mama did all she could but she couldn’t show me how to be a man but I think she did a dam good job to say I’m still here n I went throw a lot but that women was at every court date n everything💯,”

Cain may be still be in the New Orleans area, or he may be in Georgia. He lists his high schools as Benjamin Banneker High School and North Clayton High School, both in College Park, Georgia.

Peter Gold, originally from Florida, is in his fourth year of medical school at Tulane University. Professor Michele Adams indicated this weekend that it doesn’t surprise her to hear the news about Gold, as he’s always been someone to lend a helping hand and assist his fellow students.

“He was always engaged, involved with his peers and just an amazing person, so it doesn’t surprise me to hear he was trying to help someone. ‘Selfless’ is what comes to mind.”
