‘Star Wars’: J.J. Abrams Joins Forces With Middle-Earth Expert Stephen Colbert For A ‘Celebrity Nerd-Off’

With less than a month to go, Star Wars: The Force Awakens makes its debut and according to Yahoo News, director J.J. Abrams joined The Late Show’s Middle-earth expert, Stephen Colbert, at the Montclair Film Festival for a big time update regarding the continuing saga during Colbert’s “Celebrity Nerd-Off.” As most people are well aware, J.J. is a secretive director when it comes to his progress in the film industry, and his methods of keeping things under wraps.

Now, Abrams finally announced that Star Wars: The Force Awakens was officially completed, according to Tech Insider.

“This morning, at 2:30 in the morning, we finished the mix of the movie… And then I left because I had to get to the Montclair Film Festival.”

John Williams has historically made his mark in Star Wars history in providing the music for the franchise, and now continues with his work in the seventh installment. Chances are, this will increase the nostalgia factor for fans of old from the 70s and 80s, which may possibly instill newer generations of fandom with continued nostalgia.

Colbert conversed with Abrams on a few things regarding the film for about 90-minutes, with around 2,800 in attendance, and the conversation pretty much entailed J.J.’s film history from Alias to Super 8. And of course, the Star Trek films, starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, according to Tech Insider.

As anyone could have possibly noticed certain special effects aspects of Abrams’ films, he’s well known for his “lens flare” effects. They have even possibly been overused in Star Trek: Into Darkness and even his own wife felt that particular method is quite overdone. Now, he admits that he’s “pulled back” in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

“There was literally one scene where Alice Eve was so obliterated by a lens flare and I was showing the scene to my wife Katie, who just said, ‘Okay, you know what? Enough.’ I can’t see what this scene is about. Who is standing there?’ “

He even was apologetic during a Crave Online interview for the Star Trek: Into Darkness Blu-ray/DVD release party in regards to over using lens flare, and humbly as well as jokingly mentions his first step to admitting to the lens flair addiction.

Another thing that is likely to bring back the nostalgic factor of Star Wars is that Abrams is returning practical effects to the franchise, a method popular in the original three films were full body costumes which were used for the actors. This option was likely chosen so that it can have the feel of the originals.

Back in mid-October, Omaze had Middle-earth expert Stephen Colbert announce that a fan can have an opportunity to win a chance of joining himself and Abrams on-stage to ask a “nerdy question of their choice.” Stephen jokingly mentioned in the video that Abrams is likely the only foremost authority in answering a situation when crossing over characters from both Star Wars and Star Trek.

Speaking of which, an evening would not be complete at the Montclair Film Fest if he were not to speak of Tolkien lore with Abrams. Considering that Colbert is a big Middle-earth expert and had been known to stump celebrities on Tolkien-lore, according to Vulture, The Late Show host gave an opportunity to fan to ask a single question regarding a “dream project” to post to Abrams. Colbert said he would ask that the Star Wars director to create the fourth part of the Silmarillion collection, Akallabeth.

“It’s got all your greatest hits in it: It’s got elves in it, it’s got Sauron — Sauron’s actually captured … who at the time still has the d**n Ring… It’s a perfect story; it’s complete. If anybody makes anything from the Silmarillion, it should be that movie.”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters come December 18 and brings back the original characters played by Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Peter Mayhew. John Boyega and Daisy Ridley also star.
