Selena Gomez Talks Bestie Taylor Swift: ‘My Favorite Thing Is Her Strength’
Taylor Swift’s famous girl squad has seen a lot of growth in the past few years, but there’s one girl who has been there from the beginning: Selena Gomez.
Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift first became besties in 2008 when each was dating a Jonas brother (Selena was dating Nick, and Taylor was dating Joe), and the two songstresses have been close friends ever since. In an interview with Vogue magazine, Gomez went so far as to call Swift her sister.

The feeling is mutual. In a 2011 pre-Teen Choice Awards interview, Taylor called Selena her sister as well, saying that Gomez always knows what Swift is thinking.
“My friends are amazing and I’m so thankful to have them, [but] the ones that are like sisters to me are Selena Gomez and Emma Stone… They can predict my thoughts; I’ve known them for so long it’s really cool to have friends that are that close.”
Fast forward a few years, and in a November, 2015, interview with Billboard Magazine, Gomez talked about one of the reasons she loves Swift so much.
“My favorite thing about Taylor is her strength. She has the ability to be in any sort of room. Her presence is very strong. You can tell that she wears her heart on her sleeve, but she’s also really strong.”
It wasn’t the first time Gomez had said such kind things about Swift. In 2010, Selena sat down with MTV and said something similar. At first, Gomez mentioned Swift’s positivity before she went on to talk about what a strong person Swift is.
“What I admire most about Taylor is that she focuses on all the positive things, and that’s what I love about her,” Gomez said in 2010. “She’s a very strong person … and that’s what I’m proud of her for.”
Truly, Swift and Gomez have a history of supporting each other in public, and according to Instagram snaps, in private, as well.
Before the release of Taylor’s 1989 album, Selena posted this photo to Instagram, in which she described all the ways she’d gotten to listen to Swift’s album ahead of time — with no one except her BFF.
Swift, of course, responded on Twitter, saying that she could believe she was so fortunate to have such a wonderful and supportive best friend.

Obviously, the two have been best friends from the beginning, way back from Selena’s Wizards of Waverly Place days on Disney. Swift’s Fearless album was released around the same time.
Since then, both girls have gone on to successful careers, including three mega-hit studio albums from Taylor Swift and two studio albums from Selena Gomez. In addition, Gomez has had dozens of acting credits to her name.
In addition to the public displays of friendship, some question whether Gomez has gotten inked in support of Swift. In a recent interview, Gomez says her sixth and most recent tattoo represents the date on which she met her best friend. Selena notes that the date was eight years ago — right around the same time that she and Taylor started to become close. Is it possible the tattoo represents her friendship with Swift?
There’s no way to tell for sure whether the tattoo has anything to do with Swift, but one thing is obvious: Selena Gomez forms the core of Taylor Swift’s squad, and these two are destined to be best friends for a long time to come.
