‘Pretty Little Liars’ Showrunner Marlene King Talks About The End Of The Series And A Possible Movie

Pretty Little Liars is nearing the end of its run, according to most reports, but showrunner Marlene King gives PLL fans reason for hope, as she discusses the possibility that the seventh season of Pretty Little Liars may not be the last. In fact, King gives a message of hope in her comments, concerning rumors that a Pretty Little Liars movie is in the works.

Current plans for Pretty Little Liars has the show’s run ending with the season 7 finale, but the showrunner suggested that PLL fans should keep hope for a movie, after all. Vine Report says that Ms. King appeared on Good Morning, America and revealed that there are preliminary plans for a Pretty Little Liars movie.

“We’ve got some really big ideas for a great PLL movie, but that won’t happen right after the series ends,” King shared. “I think we’ll take a little break and let everybody go off and do a few things and hopefully we’ll come back together again and do something really special.”

While King and many of the cast members seem to be on board with the idea of bringing Pretty Little Liars back in a movie, one cast member, Troian Bellisario, seems content to let the show pass silently away. When asked about Pretty Little Liars‘ fate earlier this year, Bellisario seemed to have definite plans to move on, once season 7 was completed.

“It’s only got a seventh season,” Troian Bellisario said. “Yeah, that’s it, we’re done after this.”

Pretty Little Liars Have Grown Up, Says Marlene King

The whole idea behind inserting a five year time jump was to allow the Pretty Little Liars characters to grow up and match the ages of the actresses who play them, according to Marlene King. The Pretty Little Liars showrunner felt that it was time to let the girls grow up, and to give PLL fans glimpses into what their lives as adults would be like.

“The girls you last saw on Pretty Little Liars are really not girls anymore,” King says, according to E! News. “They’re grown up, very mature young women leading very interesting lives, and they’re about to come back to Rosewood again. Of course, it’s Pretty Little Liars, so they do come back with some secrets and some lies.”

While King wouldn’t go into detail, she did say that the Pretty Little Liars holiday special coming up this week would give PLL fans the scoop on what they have missed in the intervening five years, between where season 6A left off and where season 6B of Pretty Little Liars will pick up.

Marlene added that this time jump, along with the beginning of an entirely new mystery, would provide a great opportunity to bring in new viewers, since they can jump right into the series without having to go back and watch everything, prior to season 6B.

One of the greatest aspects of Pretty Little Liars, aside from the intense mysteries facing the girls, has always been the relationships of each of the girls, giving PLL fans something else to draw pleasure from, or to stress over. For many, the relationship between Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) has been as important as the very plot of Pretty Little Liars, so the idea of a time jump has some fans worried, but King says Haleb fans should never give up hope.

“I won’t quote a famous line of Spencer Hastings, which is hope leads to eternal misery, so I won’t say that, but I will say I love Haleb, I ship Haleb, and there’s always hope for Haleb, always.”

The Pretty Little Liars holiday special will air on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. on ABC Family.
