Pregnant Woman Dies After Her Womb Is Torn Open By Repeated Stabbing, But ‘Miracle’ Baby Survives

A pregnant woman who was stabbed by another woman multiple times in New York City has died, but her baby – later named Genesis – managed to survive the horrendous tragedy in a manner befitting a fairy tale.

According to New York Daily News, 22-year-old Angelikque Sutton was eight and a half months pregnant when she was attacked by Ashleigh Wade, also 22, at the latter’s house in the Bronx on Friday afternoon. Police received a 911 call at about 2:30 p.m from Sutton’s boyfriend, Patrick Bradley, who was being questioned by the police Friday evening.

“I’m the baby’s father. I’ve been with her for eight years,” a frantic Bradley told reporters at the scene of the crime. “I don’t know what’s going on.”

When paramedics arrived at the scene hours after the crime had been perpetrated, they were shocked to find the pregnant woman in a pool of blood, having been stabbed multiple times. A baby girl was found in the nearby bathroom, drenched in blood and with her umbilical cord intact. The first responders believed the baby to be dead too, but she was found to be breathing. The other woman, Wade, tried to convince the arriving police officers that the blood-soaked baby belonged to her, but the authorities were having none of it.

A high-ranking police officer spoke to reporters about the gruesome tragedy, saying it was clear from the outset that the baby belonged to Sutton.

“She [Wade] tried to sell the idea that the baby was hers and she had just given birth right there. But that was clearly not the case.”

The newborn baby, who was later taken to Montefiore Medical Center, remains in good condition, according to New York Times.

The police said that charges against Wade were pending Friday night, as she was taken to Jacobi Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation.

It is not yet clear what transpired between the two women before Wade stabbed the pregnant woman multiple times with a knife, cutting “out her womb” in the process, police said. However, an unnamed relative said that the two women went to the same school, and one theory is that the suspect had tried to snatch the baby from the pregnant woman’s stomach, in what a New York City councilman termed “a case of baby snatching.”

Though the police are still trying to figure out the details of the crime, they said it was a miracle that the baby had managed to survive the gruesome attack. “Usually when something like this happens the baby is dead,” a police officer said.

Emergency officials testified to Wade’s house, located at Monticello Avenue near West fourth street, being in a state of complete mess after the knife attack. The floor and the staircase of the two-story house was splattered in blood, while the first responders also found a placenta near one of the bathrooms.

Neighbors were rattled by news that a pregnant woman was attacked so brutally in their midst in an area of the Bronx which is generally considered safe. Jelani Magloire, 24, said she had never seen something so horrific.

“I’ve been living here 17 years probably, and this is the first time I’m seeing something like this happen,” she said.

Neighbors also testified to the pregnant woman being a quiet sort who rarely exchanged words with them, except the occasional greeting. One woman said it was a tragic loss for the young baby who had just stepped into the world.

“I keep thinking about that poor family. Next week is Thanksgiving,” she said.

The police said more information about the incident will only be available once the autopsy of the pregnant woman was completed.
