Police: Florida Man Says ‘Voices’ Made Him Kill Girlfriend

A Florida man is accused of brutally killing his 27-year-old girlfriend, and the reasons why are disturbing. People Magazine writes that 27-year-old Nicholas Keith Morris has been arrested and charged with the death of Cortney Adkinson.

The Panama City News Herald reports that the incident took place last week in the home shared by the Florida man and his girlfriend, whom he was engaged to marry. He told authorities that the two of them were simply laying in bed smoking cigarettes when voices from the walls began to tell him to cut 27-year-old Cortney Adkinson.

Instead of ignoring the voices, Nicholas Keith Morris told police that he was compelled to grab a knife, which he then used to slit the throat of the woman he was planning to marry. According to Morris, the woman shot up from the bed and started screaming, but he covered her mouth with his hand and held onto her until she went limp. He told police that he laid on the floor next to her dead body before he finally got up and called police. Just shortly after 9:50 a.m., Tuesday morning, he called 911 and told them that he “committed a very bad crime.” Not long after his call, someone else called 911 to report that a man was laying in the street, covered with blood.

Authorities with the Bay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Morris and slapped him with an open charge of murder. Upon checking the crime scene they found evidence that went along with the story he had told them. The slain body of Cortney Adkinson laid on the floor. She had a large gash across her throat. Next to her body laid a black-handled folding knife, which was allegedly used to kill the woman.

Nicholas Keith Morris is currently being held in jail without bond. Depending on the murder charge he is ultimately indicted with, he could face life imprisonment or the death penalty. Given the idea that he claims to have heard voices, he could be found insane. At this point no reports indicate whether or not he has been put under a psychological review.

This isn’t the first time a Florida man has been accused of a bizarre crime. Last year William Cormier III was convicted of murdering an ex-reporter and encasing his body in concrete so he could take his Magic: The Gathering card collection. Also last year, a Florida man by the name of Aaron Bernard Smith made media headlines when he was arrested for throwing furniture at his mail carrier. The Ocala Star Banner reports that the 27-year-old man became enraged when he found out that the mail carrier did not have any mail for him that day.

In 2013, a Florida man allegedly beat his girlfriend with an Xbox 360 video game console before stabbing her to death. Believe it or not, the choice of weapon in this slaying isn’t the weirdest part of the story.

Twenty-two-year-old Darius Johnson told authorities that he “needed to sacrifice someone who was born under the Taurus astrological sign.” He also told authorities that he had slain the woman like he was “fighting a dragon.” At the time of his initial interrogation, the man did not specify exactly why needed to kill his girlfriend, who was a Taurus. His public defender had also declared that he wanted the man to undergo a mental health evaluation.
