Katy Perry Facts: Real Name, Song Inspirations, Crazy Obsessions, And More

Katy Perry has been called the “Princess of Pop,” and she is definitely all that. There are so many things fans know about their beloved singer/songwriter, but there are definitely tidbits about Katy Perry that are little-known facts that will knock any fan’s socks right off their feet. How many of these facts did you already know?

1. Katy Perry isn’t her real name! According to International Business Times, she was born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson and she changed her name to Katy Perry so she wouldn’t get mixed up with actress Kate Hudson. Perry is her mother’s maiden name.

2. Katy Perry tied the music record made by the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Originally reported by Billboard in 2011, she became the first woman and the second artist to ever have five number one hits off the same album, Teenage Dream. No one had done that since Jackson’s album, Bad, in 1987-88.

3. Katy Perry collects the hair of other celebrities? As creepy and strange as it sounds, she does. Us Weekly originally reported the fact in 2013, when Katy Perry admitted to the odd hobby when someone asked her what she carries in her purse during a Q&A session.

“One of the first times I went to the Grammys, I got to share a dressing room with Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift. And I asked for a lock of their hair from each one of them, which is totally creepy, but awesome.”

She went on to say how she put bows on the locks of hair.

“[I] put little bows on [the locks] individually [and kept them in my purse]. That was my little secret. I’m a freak!”

Perhaps it’s her obsession with other people’s hair that has been her inspiration for her numerous hairstyles over the years?

4. Daily News reports that Katy Perry grew up in an incredibly strict household. Both of her parents were born-again Christian pastors who wouldn’t even allow Katy to say the words “deviled eggs.” Instead, she had to call them “angeled eggs.”

5. Daily News also reports that Katy Perry released her first album when she was sixteen. It was titled “Katy Hudson” and it bombed, selling fewer than two hundred copies. The album was Christian Rock.

6. According to Daily News, Katy Perry was not allowed to watch many popular cartoons and shows, such as The Smurfs. This is ironic since her film debut was as the voice of Smurfette in the movie, The Smurfs.

7. Daily News also reports that Katy Perry has the largest Twitter following in the world, stealing the honor from Justin Bieber in 2013. She currently has more than 77 million followers.

8. Scarlett Johansson was the inspiration behind “I Kissed a Girl.” NME reports Katy Perry saw a picture of Johansson in a magazine and told her boyfriend at the time that she would totally make out with her.

“‘I Kissed a Girl’ was inspired when I opened up a magazine and I saw a picture of Scarlett Johansson. I was with my boyfriend at the time, and I said to him, ‘I’m not going to lie: If Scarlett Johansson walked into the room and wanted to make out with me, I would make out with her. I hope you’re okay with that?'”

9. BoomsBeat reports that Katy Perry has a cat named Kitty Purry and the cat has its own blog.

10. Finally, BoomsBeat also reports Katy Perry has a tattoo for every album she has created (similar to Ed Sheeran) and has even brought a tattoo artist on tour with her.

“We open it up to the band and the dancers and the crew. Even my manager is representing with a peppermint, which they probably hate!”
