NFL: Jacksonville Jaguars Defeat Tennessee Titans 19-13 On ‘Thursday Night Football’

In this week’s edition of NFL Thursday Night Football, the Jacksonville Jaguars came out on top against the Tennessee Titans after some crucial plays late in the game.

After a halftime score of 6-6, the Titans answered the Jaguars’ third quarter field goal with a touchdown on the very next drive to put them up 13-9 headed into the final quarter. But when Tennessee missed a field goal from the Jacksonville 35, the momentum was back on the side of the Jags, and they finished strong to take home their second win a row, their fourth of the season. While Bortles threw an interception on Jacksonville’s next possession, the next three drives ended with punts. Unfortunately for the Titans, Rashad Greene returned that last punt for more than 60 yards, leading to an easy touchdown for the Jaguars.

With a 16-13 lead, Jacksonville forced a fumble on Tennessee’s next possession and followed up with a field goal to force the Titans to score a touchdown to stay in the game. With 2:19 left in the game, the Jaguars were able to prevent the Titans from marching 80 yards to the end zone. Tennessee quarterback Marcus Mariota was sacked on the final play of the game to seal the victory for Jacksonville.

As noted by Bleacher Report, the Jacksonville Jaguars have trouble finishing strong when the game is close this season. In fact, if you gave the Jaguars an additional touchdown and extra point in each of their losses this season, their record would improve from 4-6 to 6-3-1, which would put them at first place in the AFC South, rather than trailing Indianapolis and Houston by a half game. At the same time, if the Colts can’t get past the Atlanta Falcons and the Texans fail to shut down the New York Jets, the Jaguars will find themselves tied for first place in the AFC South headed into Week 12 of the NFL season.

The story isn’t quite as rosy for the last-place Tennessee Titans. Being two games behind third-place Jacksonville — and just two and a half games out of first place, prior to Sunday’s games — it’s still (technically) possible for the Titans to make the post season. If they channel a miracle and win their next six games, they’ll finish the season 8-8. Every team in the AFC South is currently holding a losing record.

If you had anyone from the Jacksonville Jaguars or the Tennessee Titans on your fantasy football team, there were a few notable players from the game that you may be interested in (according to the standard scoring at NFL.com’s fantasy site). With 231 passing yards, a rushing touchdown and no interceptions or fumbles, Marcus Mariota (18.64) was the most valuable fantasy player of the day. With a fumble and an interception coupled with his single passing touchdown, Blake Bortles (10.78) failed to live up to his projected 18 points and wasn’t even Jacksonville’s most valuable fantasy player — he was beat out by Allen Robinson (12.80), Bortles’ receiver that tallied 131 yards Thursday night. While quarterbacks are typically the highest scoring position on a fantasy team, Bortles was also beaten out by Tennessee’s tight end Delanie Walker (12.70) and running back Antonio Andrews (11.10). Projected to score 16.60 points this week, Jaguars running back T.J. Yeldon (9.90) also fell short, with a total of 82 offensive yards.

The Jaguars’ kicker Jason Myers (12.00) outscored the Titans’ kicker Ryan Succop (9.00) while both teams’ defenses brought in 10 points even.

Next Sunday, the Jacksonville Jaguars schedule has them hosting the San Diego Chargers (2-7), who are in last place in the AFC West. For Week 12 of the NFL regular season, the Tennessee Titans schedule brings the same division’s third place team to town, the Oakland Raider (4-5). Both games begin at noon on November 29.
