Ronda Rousey: Medical Suspension Prohibits UFC Star From Fighting For Up To Six Months

Just days after Ronda Rousey’s shocking loss to Holly Holm, the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion has received even more bad news. It was reported that Rousey was taken to the hospital following her head-kick knockout, and doctors treated her for a busted lip. The extent of Rousey’s injuries was downplayed by many, including UFC president Dana White. Now, it appears Ronda suffered more damage than previously thought because she was recently issued a six-month medical suspension by the UFC.

According to MixedMartialArts.com, the UFC recently released a list of the fighters who received medical suspensions, and it revealed that Rousey is prohibited from fighting for 60 days and is not allowed to have contact for 45 days. A statement regarding the matter was posted on the website.

“Today the UFC released the suspension information directly to mixedmartialarts.com for last weekend’s UFC 193 in Melbourne, Australia.

“As there is no sanctioning organization in Australia for mixed martial arts, the UFC acts as its own governing body and provides the suspensions to MMA LLC, which acts as the record and suspension keeper for the Association of Boxing Commissions.”

As said in a report fromE! News, the list showed that Rousey could be given a six-month medical suspension unless she is cleared by a head CT scan that reveals no damage. However, it is unclear if the suspension will be implemented for that long. UFC bosses, under the advice of doctors, have decided to suspend all her fights for a period of at least 60 days.

Ronda Rousey lost with a spectacular KO at 59 seconds into the second round and was subsequently transferred to a nearby hospital in Melbourne, Australia, where it was determined that the 28-year-old would need plastic surgery on her lip after she received several stitches. Speaking with the press shortly after the fight, Dana White gave the following statement.

“She was transported, because she got knocked out, number one. Her lip was split in half. They had to sew her lip. They transported her.”

Until last Saturday, the vast majority of the public had never heard of Holly Holm. At 34, this former professional boxer has undoubtedly created the biggest upset in the history of the sport. Holm, who also goes by the name “The Preacher’s Daughter,” dominated Rousey the entire fight and delivered punishing blows to her head before knocking her out with a devastating swift kick to her jawline.

Holm landed numerous straight jabs with her left hand in the first and second rounds, which left Rousey bleeding from the mouth. In the second round, the visibly hurt Rousey tried to chase Holm down and, in a transition, got caught with a knockout head kick. According to a recent report from Wired, Holm kicked Rousey with 50 pounds of force, which was more than enough to send her crashing to the ground.

“I don’t know, I’m trying to take it all in. This is crazy!” Holm said shortly after the knockout. “Getting in here, I just felt so much support — I thought, ‘How can I not do this with all this support?’ I had the best coaching, from stand-up to grappling to wrestling. I have to say, everything we worked on presented itself in the fight. Every grab she tried to get, on the cage — I have not spent this much time in the gym before any fight in my life.”

Meanwhile, Ronda Rousey finally broke her silence on Monday and posted the below message to her Instagram page.

“I just wanted to thank everyone for the love and support,” Rousey wrote. “I appreciate the concerns about my health, but I’m fine. As I had mentioned before, I’m going to take a little bit of time, but I’ll be back.”
