‘Madagascar 3’ Beats Out ‘Rock Of Ages’ At Box Office

The latest Madagascar movie was able to hold on to the top spot at the box office this weekend despite competition from Tom Cruise’s new movie Rock of Ages and Adam Sandler’s That’s My Boy.

Reuters reports that Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, brought in $33.5 million at the U.S. and Canadian box office. The movie, which debuted last week, has already brought in more than $120 million.

Ridley Scott’s latest sci-fi movie, Prometheus, brought in $20.2 million during its second weekend to bring its total up to about $89 million.

Rock of Ages, starring Tom Cruise, had the biggest opening for a new film this weekend, but still only ranked third behind Madagascar and Prometheus. Cruise’s new movie debuted with an estimated $15.1 million. The LA Times reports that Rock of Ages was expected to bring in at least $20 million.

Cruise’s new movie wasn’t the only film to under-perform this weekend. Adam Sandler’s new movie, which has received abysmal reviews, also failed to hit the mark. That’s My Boy finished fourth for the weekend with $13.1 million.
