James “Whitey” Bulger is a former organized crime boss who lived undercover for sixteen years with his girlfriend, Catherine Greig.

The two lived in a Santa Monica for years, with a handwritten sign on the door saying, “Please Do Bot Knock,” because he slept during the day. Nearby residents had no idea the man who lived inside was on the FBI’s most wanted list for his role in the murders of 19 people, according to The Huffington Post.

Prosecutors have released hundreds of pages of documentation regarding their raid on the couple’s apartment. The two lived under assumed names as Charlie and Carol Gasko, and neighbors described a man who would sit in his apartment all night with a pair of binoculars. The items released by police show a glimpse into the notorious mobster’s undercover life.

Bulger was the former leader of the Winter Hill Gang, and was one of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives until he was arrested in June of 2011 at the age of 81.

Among the documents investigators found in their apartment, according to the L.A. Times, were:

• “A mini-library of gangster literature, including ‘Mob Cops,’ ‘The Last Gangster,’ ‘Public Enemies,’ ‘True Stories of Law & Order’ and ‘Escape from Alcatraz’
• A“60 Minutes”interview with former Bulger colleague John Martorano. In the interview, Martorano said he was furious when he learned Bulger was an FBI informant. ‘If I could have killed him, I’d have killed him,’ Martorano said. ‘That was what I think he deserves.’
• Roughly 100 handwritten pages of Bulger’s memoir. The manuscript has a foreword of sorts, an investigator noted, in which Bulger explains he began writing because he’d been ‘driven to this by the lies of [Martorano] and seeing his insane interview on ’60 Minutes’ was the last straw.’”

The Huffington Post notes that a few books in Bulger’s mob library included non-fiction accounts about him and his mob. Joshua Bond, the apartment manager who lived next door to Whitey Bulger and his girlfriend, thought that they were just, ”the old couple that always wore white.”

The FBI investigator who interviewed him stated:

“If Bond had not thought the Gaskos were such a nice old couple, he would have thought that Charlie was trying to get Bond in shape because he (Charlie) was attracted to him (Bond).”

Also included in the pictures are guns holes in the walls of the apartment, some showing guns hidden inside.
