‘The Vampire Diaries’ Spoilers: Do Alaric And Caroline’s Futures Mean The End For Steroline?

The flashforwards offering glimpses into the futures of the Vampire Diaries characters in Season 7 have had a few twists already – and it’s only been six episodes. But, perhaps the biggest surprise of all to come in, “Best Served Cold,” was not only a new relationship revealed, but something in the present explained a mystery that had been introduced a couple episodes ago.

Going into The Vampire Diaries Season 7, Episode 6, viewers already knew that Caroline is engaged three years into the future and that her fiancé can’t be Stefan because she refuses to take his calls and said she never wants to hear his name again. Furthermore, when it is said that her fiancé wants to visit Mystic Falls, she said he knows they couldn’t go back there. With Stefan ruled out as a possibility at that point, all anyone could do was guess as to who her fiancé might be. Tyler remains a possibility, especially after Stefan reached out to him to talk to Caroline.

Meanwhile, in three years, Alaric has twin daughters and when Damon stopped by in the latest TVD episode, the vampire asked when he last spoke to his fiancée and told him to get her on the phone because Stefan was being hunted again, and it was only a matter of time before Caroline became the bait. That was when Caroline — who had been attacked at the news studio by an unseen figure — came on TV, bleeding from the head, with an urgent message from Stefan. Yes, Alaric and Caroline are apparently engaged in the future.

While that seemingly came out of nowhere, much like Bonnie and Enzo being together three years from now, the present does seem to be setting up both relationships. Bonnie and Enzo got all flirty at Lily’s party. As for Caroline and Alaric, Valerie realized that the chanting at his and Jo’s wedding was the Gemini coven’s way of securing the future of the next set of twins – by transferring them. When the heretic performed a spell to try to find them using Alaric’s blood and a map, it looked like it hadn’t worked since his blood traveled off the map. That was because, as Valerie revealed, the babies are inside Caroline.

While that explains how Alaric has twin daughters in the future, it also means The Vampire Diaries is going to have to explain how it’s possible for a vampire to be pregnant and carry the babies to full term. Is it because the babies are Gemini twins? Is that part of the Gemini coven’s spell? Is it just time to suspend disbelief that on a show about the supernatural? Anything is possible now, despite previous talk about how kids weren’t a possibility for a vampire.

This new storyline is how they’re going to deal with Candice King’s pregnancy. E! News reported what Caroline Dries has said about Caroline, as well. “She is going to find, I think, an inner strength that she didn’t know she had,” the EP shared. And, considering what she’s going through in the present, she’s going to need that “inner strength.”

But, with Caroline and Alaric engaged, what does that mean for Stefan and Caroline’s future in The Vampire Diaries Season 7? According to Entertainment Weekly, there may be reason to still have hope for Steroline.

“Yes, Alaric is the one who put the ring on Caroline’s finger, but that doesn’t mean they’re living happily ever after. In an upcoming flash-forward, we’ll see that perhaps everything isn’t perfect between the couple, so there might be home for Steroline yet.”

Considering, in the present, Caroline just found out she’s pregnant with his and his dead wife’s twins, it seems hard to believe that the relationship can be without problems. There is, after all, still the mystery of why Caroline said she never wanted to hear Stefan’s name. Maybe it’s something they can come back from, and maybe once they deal with whoever’s out there hunting Stefan, things can change. As these flash-forwards have shown, after all, anything is possible now on this show.

The Vampire Diaries Season 7 airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m. on the CW.
