The Pakistan cricket team dominated England in the first match of their four-game One Day International series, and fans can watch live online Friday as the world sixth-ranked visitors attempt to pull even with eighth-ranked Pakistan on the hosts’ adopted home ground in Abu Dhabi. This is the second ODI mach between the two teams in their 2015 bilateral series, a series that is crucial to Pakistan as they try to get in position for automatic qualification for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.
As hosts of the next World Cup tournament, England don’t need to worry about making the cut. Other than England, the top seven teams in the ICC world rankings as of September of 2017 qualify for what will be a 10-team World Cup tournament in 2019 — cut from 14 for this year’s edition.
The final two spots will be determined by a qualifying tournament to be held in Bangladesh in the spring of 2018. Right now, Pakistan is on the bubble between automatic qualifying, and being forced into the risky qualifier tournament.
But to make any real progress in the rankings, Pakistan needs to win all four matches of the series, which would let them close in on seventh-ranked Bangladesh, who currently sit seven points clear of their regional rivals.

With just one batsman ranked in the world top 20 — 24-year-old England Captain Eoin Morgan — who is ranked 11th in the world — England must figure out how to extract a higher run total from their side in Friday’s match, after managing just 216 in the first ODI on Wednesday. That total was just weak enough to let Pakistan overtake it inside of 44 overs, with six wickets remaining.
“We were looking at a minimum of 250 but getting there obviously wasn’t easy on this type of wicket. We have to reassess that quickly. Probably after 20 overs, the ball started to hold up and grip more than it did in the previous few overs,” Morgan said on Thursday.
Morgan himself comes in as England’s next-highest-ranked batsman, at 21st on the ICC table. It was the skipper’s 76-run stand, along with 60 from James Taylor, that gave England any hope at all on Wednesday after dropping three wickets early for just 14 runs.
But after Shoaib Malik dismissed both Morgan and Taylor, only Chris Woakes with 33 and David Willey with 13 managed to get into double digits at all.
The highest-ranked bowler on either side is Pakistan seven-footer Mohammed Irfan, who ranks 14th.
Pakistan is not without problems of their own, as their 37-year-old veteran Younis Khan, who has 7,249 ODI runs in 265 matches, suddenly announced his retirement after the first ODI.
