if you were left disappointed by Microsoft’s showing at E3, holding onto hope that something greater is being held back until Gamescom or Tokyo Game Show, prepare to be even more disappointed.

Microsoft’s Larry Hryb, who you may know as Major Nelson, confirmed today on his blog that Microsoft will not be attending Gamescom this August, nor will they be attending Tokyo Game Show later on in the year.

“As you saw at E3, we have a solid line-up of games launching this holiday, along with other entertainment experiences,” Hryb wrote. “We’ve changed our approach a little, though. This year, Xbox will be focusing on smaller, more localized promotions and experiences for press, partners, retailers and customers around the world.

“Which means that as you might have seen on some of the news sites today, we won’t be taking part in gamescom or Tokyo Games Show this year.”

Microsoft isn’t the only company to back out of Gamescom, which is the largest gaming show on the planet. Earlier this year, Nintendo announced that it would not be attending, and publisher Sega also backed out of the annual trade show.

Late last year, Microsoft also announced that it would be backing out of CES, and that their 2012 keynote would be their last. Microsoft hinted that it’s possible we could see an event of their own.

Do you think Microsoft is making a mistake by backing out of Gamescom and TGS?
