Watch New York Red Bulls Vs. D.C. United Live Online: Streaming Link, MLS Playoffs — Eastern Semifinal

The oldest rivalry in Major League Soccer comes to a head yet again and fans can watch online live as the New York Red Bulls host D.C. United in the second leg of their MLS Eastern Conference semifinal showdown. Red Bulls bring a slight but significant advantage into the match, after winning 1-0 on November 1 in the first leg of the playoff tie.

The victory by a single away goal means that to win the semifinal and move one step closer to the MLS Cup Final, D.C. United has a few possible scenarios, and none of them are easy. A two-goal win would be the cleanest method for United to advance; but, if D.C. United scores at least two goals and wins by just one, D.C. still wins on the away goals rule.

A 1-0 win within 90 minutes or United sends the playoff tie into overtime, in which the away goals rule no longer applies. In that case, the winner of the 30 minute overtime period — or the penalty shootout of overtime ends in a draw — advances to the MLS Eastern Conference Final, to face the winner of the Columbus Crew vs. Montréal Impact semifinal, which will be played later in the day on Sunday.

Montréal leads their two-legged playoff tie 2-1, but the Crew have the away goal heading into their home leg of the semifinal.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. Eastern Time (noon Pacific Time) at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey on Sunday, November 8.

Red Bulls Captain Dax McCarty scored the lone goal for New York in the first leg, and is expected to figure heavily again in the outcome of the return match, if Red Bulls are able to advance. But, United Coach Ben Olsen is fully aware of the task facing his side to overcome a 1-0 deficit on the Red Bulls home turf.

“We need to get a goal in the few chances that we have or do better on set pieces. We have to shore up the other side,” Olsen said on Saturday. “They are better at home. They’re as good in New York as any team in this league. It’s a very tough place to play. I don’t care. That doesn’t concern me or these guys. It’s a great challenge now to go in there and get the result that we need.”

Though the scoreline showed a slim, one-goal margin in the first leg, New York dominated the game — not allowing D.C. United a single shot on goal, only the fourth time in the history of the MLS playoffs that a team had been held, not only goalless, but shotless, in a playoff match.
