‘The Walking Dead’ Executive Producer Greg Nicotero Talks Glenn’s Fate, Rick’s Hand, And If Norman Reedus Is Leaving For His New Show

With The Walking Dead off to an incredibly thrilling start this year, the show has left fans with a lot of questions going into Episode 5. Along with wondering if Glenn survived his dumpster dive with Nick, fans still don’t know what’s going on with Rick’s hand and the zombie horde, and whether or not Norman Reedus is going to remain on the show after starring in another series.

Luckily, executive producer Greg Nicotero recently sat down with Comic Book and discussed some of these pressing issues. In regards to everyone’s biggest question, Nicotero seemed to hint that there is a chance Glenn made it out alive, though the same is probably not true for Nick.

“Is Nicholas still alive?! Well, you know, we definitely saw some blood spatter on Glenn, so in terms of if somebody would be able to potentially survive that gun shot, I don’t know,” he stated.

When the producer was asked about Glenn’s close calls with death, he remained elusive in regards to Glenn’s fate.

“That’s not even a question I would begin to start to answer. The truth of the matter is a lot of our characters have those brushes with death and some of them make it through and some of them don’t.”

Meanwhile, in regards to Rick’s cut hand, Nicotero admitted that Rick losing his hand has been brought up in their discussions. However, he admitted that the show has yet to do it because of the work it would take on the technical side of things.

“You know, it’s so funny… The whole Rick losing his hand conversation, [Andrew Lincoln] has told me a thousand times, ‘Listen, let’s just chop it off. I don’t know why he has a hand. I think it would be great,'” he revealed. “I think it would be very challenging indeed to try to deal with removing Rick’s hand from a technical standpoint.”

At the same time, Nicotero also touched on Reedus’ future with the show. Despite playing a large part in a brand new series, Nicotero assured fans that Reedus will not be leaving The Walking Dead anytime soon.

“No! That show is something he shot a promo for before we even started shooting. I saw that that was announced and he’s like ‘Oh, man! Now everyone’s gonna think that you guys don’t want me on the show anymore!'” he explained. “No. It’s completely different. We have lots of our actors that go off and do different things in between. He did a movie last year that Robert Kirkman and Dave Alpert produced. That didn’t mean he wasn’t coming back, a lot of people just assume that.”

Although Nicotero’s interview cleared some things up, we still don’t have a definitive answer concerning Glenn’s fate. Hopefully, the upcoming episode will provide us with some answers. With that in mind, Melty is reporting that fans should expect the show to pick up its pace following Episode 4.

In fact, based on the trailer, the coming episode will focus on the fallout in Alexandria after the town suffered an attack by the Wolves. The attack and subsequent death of many of the residents in the town in episode three is set to push the surviving residents to learn how to fight for their lives.

While the resident of Alexandria learn to protect themselves against zombies and other humans, it appears as though Maggie will venture outside the walls in order to find Glenn. While it isn’t clear when this happens in the episode, we can only hope that we get a sense of where Glenn is at, and whether or not he has turned into a zombie yet.
