‘Power Rangers’ Movie Written By ‘X-Men’ And ‘Thor’ Writers

Power Rangers movie. Did we ever think we would hear those words? Yes, it’s true that the 1990s television series is being brought back in movie format and the casting is finally complete. Time reports that Becky Gomez (aka. Becky G.) has been cast as Yellow Ranger, and fans of the Power Rangers movie couldn’t be happier.

Those who might not have enjoyed this pop culture hit of the 1990s may not be familiar with the “Go, Go, Power Rangers!” chant. But the TV series has been brought to the big screen before, as CinemaBlend reports, once in the 1995 movie Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, and again in the 1997 movie Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie.

Not only that, but the series is still going strong after 22 years, something many who grew up in the 1990s might be surprised to hear. Collider reports that the Power Rangers series will become a Netflix exclusive series in 2017, the same year that the Power Rangers movie is due to be released.

Joining Becky G. in the cast of the Power Rangers movie are Naomi Scott as Pink Ranger, Ludi Lin as Black Ranger, R.J. Cyler as Blue Ranger, and Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger. For those who might not remember the naming of the rangers in the original television show, catch it here.

According to Den of Geek, of the cast members, only Becky G. and Naomi Scott have any real acting credits to their names. Scott appeared in The Martian and Becky G. has been seen in a few episodes of Empire. Becky G. also has an impressive music career, with her song “Shower” achieving No. 16 on the Billboard charts. Den of Greek also provides the official Power Rangers movie synopsis.

“From a story by Executive Producer Roberto Orci (Transformers, Star Trek, Amazing Spider-Man 2) and screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor) comes a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.”

IGN reports that the original character names will be used in the Power Rangers movie, contrary to previous reports. Power Rangers tweeted the names Jason, Kimberly, Billy, Zack, and Trini in relation to the Power Rangers movie. It looks like they will stay true to the original series.

According to Billboard, the Power Rangers movie will be directed by Dean Israelite and it will hit theaters sometime in 2017. The screenplay is being written by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, who wrote the X-Men: First Class script and also worked on Thor and the television series Fringe. Brian Casentini and Allison Shearmur will produce the movie.

CinemaBlend also states that there are numerous reports that the Power Rangers movie will closely follow the original TV series, which means Zordon will be the one to recruit the five teenagers by giving them the Power Coins. It is not clear yet exactly when the movie will take place or whether there will be new characters introduced.

The reboot of this classic TV series will excite new young viewers and will give the older generation a sense of nostalgia for those bygone days. The Power Rangers movie is certainly not to be missed when it hits the theaters in 2017. Just be ready to go back in time when you hear Jason shout “It’s morphin’ time!”
