‘Sons Of Anarchy’s Tommy Flanagan Trades Harley For Knife For New Role In ‘Gotham’

Sons of Anarchy has always been known for its gritty, dramatic portrayal of a lawless motorcycle gang in a California town. Sadly, the show is no more, but one of the show’s main actors is set to appear on another hit television drama series. So, even though fans might miss Sons of Anarchy, they can still enjoy some of the talent the show portrayed when we watch the actors branch out to other shows.

In this case, the actor is Tommy Flanagan. He will be shifting gears from his previous role at Chibs in Sons of Anarchy to his new role as the Knife in Gotham. Flanagan will take on the role of a character who is cunning, charming, and completely ruthless. Flanagan put out a teaser tweet in October, hinting that he would be on Gotham, but not giving any details.

He also posted the same photo on Instagram.

The Knife might just be the perfect character for Flanagan to play, considering his role on Sons of Anarchy. The Knife is a hitman for hire who has been described by ComicBook as remorseless.

“He will sit with you, laugh with you, and then cut your throat.”

The Knife has been brought out as a new character that has been created outside of comic book source material, but Newsarama reports that there was a similar villain of the same name that appeared in a 1944 issue of Feature Comics. This was published by Quality Comics before DC Comics acquired the rights to many of Quality Comics’ characters.

As for Sons of Anarchy, the show might be over, but Kurt Sutter, the show’s creator, has plenty more dark material where that came from. Anyone who has seen his new series, The Bastard Executioner, likely agrees. It certainly is bloody and just a tad graphic. Then again, Sutter grew up next door to a prison in Clark, New Jersey with a father who couldn’t relate to him and an alcoholic mother. He was going down a dark path in his youth and found a creative outlet for it, according to New Jersey Monthly.

“Writing had always been my form of expression, even though some of the plays I wrote during high school and college were rubbish.”

Sutter also said he has always been into darker heroes.

“I’m really drawn to sort of broken and conflicted heroes.”

This has led him to write some great material, including the script for the movie Southpaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal. He also acts in some of his shows, playing Otto in Sons of Anarchy and the Dark Mute in The Bastard Executioner.

Sutter has more in the works, aside from getting The Bastard Executioner off the ground, including a prequel to Sons of Anarchy. But, as Sutter moves beyond Sons of Anarchy, he will have to do so without one of his best producers. Entertainment Weekly reports that Kevin Corcoran, who produced Sons of Anarchy and was known as the child actor who played the youngest son in Old Yeller, passed away on Tuesday at the age of sixty-six.

Fans will need to let Sons of Anarchy lay down to rest, even though it is devastating to say goodbye to the show. Just rest assured that Kurt Sutter has more dark hits up his sleeve. As for Gotham, it is definitely on the must-watch list with Flanagan gearing up to appear in Season 2 of the show. Plus, Carter Matt reports that Michael Chiklis will also join the cast as a regular, taking the show to a new level of awesome.
