Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, answered questions after a luncheon at Gillette Stadium for honorees of the Myra Kraft Community MVP Awards on Wednesday, including those about the recent extension of tight end Rob Gronkowski.

The Boston Globe reports that Kraft said:

“We’re trying to always plan ahead for the future, do our strategic planning. In this age of salary cap, what’s going to happen in the next few years with the cap, you have to have a core group of players that you can plan around as the foundation of your team.”

According to The Boston Herald, the community volunteers who showed up for the luncheon were also treated with a photo session with quarterback Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, and punter Zoltan Mesko. Gronkowski’s contract extension includes six more years with the Pats, as well as $54 million.

Before the luncheon, Robert Kraft spent time out on the field, braving the rain to watch the second day of minicamp. According to colleague Rich Thompson, who was on hand for the event, stated to The Boston Herald that Kraft told him:

” This is exciting being out at mini-camp and seeing these guys. First of all we had 100 percent of our guys here and I think our personnel department and Bill (Belichick) have done an outstanding job selecting talent and potential on both sides of the ball. I’m very excited about this season starting, I can’t wait for football to come back.”
