San Francisco 49ers Rumors: Head Coach Jim Tomsula To Be Fired Soon

San Francisco 49ers rumors indicate head coach Jim Tomsula could get fired soon. These 49ers rumors may not surprise many fans after the rough start that Tomsula has had since taking over the team. A report from CBS Sports relays how the Vegas oddsmakers feel he will be one of the next two NFL coaches to get fired. At 5/1 odds, Tomsula is only behind Jim Caldwell of the Detroit Lions (1/2 odds) on the list of most likely coaches to not finish out the 2015 NFL season.

After coaching Stanford to a 12-1 record and an Orange Bowl win in 2010, Jim Harbaugh was hired as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Harbaugh spent four seasons in charge of the 49ers, leading the franchise to a 44-19-1 record during his tenure. The team never finished below .500 and even played in the 2012 Super Bowl. Despite that success (a 69.5 win percentage), the front office parted ways with Harbaugh and put his defensive coordinator in charge of the team.

There have been a number of San Francisco 49ers rumors recently, including whether starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick should be benched. That came to pass, and now Blaine Gabbert will be running the offense against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, November 8. It’s a game at home, scheduled for 1:05 p.m. PT, so it could at least put Gabbert in a good position to succeed. The Falcons are 6-2 on the season, though, so it won’t be an easy game for the 49ers to stay competitive on defense.

Since taking over as the 49ers’ head coach, Jim Tomsula has led his team to a 2-6 record. That’s good enough for last place in the NFC West and just one game back from the Detroit Lions (1-7) for the worst record in the NFL. Even in a year where the defense has had a lot of changes, that is simply not getting it done. Through eight games, the 49ers have been outscored 207-109, including a 20-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on October 22. Losing to Seahawks (again) without mustering much of a fight on offense got the NFL analysts talking about Kaepernick getting benched.

The 109 points scored by the 49ers is the worst mark in the NFL, and it’s by a very wide margin. The team with the second fewest points has scored 125 but has done that in only seven games, compared to the eight games that the 49ers have played this season. Allowing about 26 points a game is also a trait that 49ers fans are unfamiliar with after the success Jim Harbaugh had brought the team for four straight seasons. Now someone may have to pay the price for these struggles, and the rumors indicate it could be Jim Tomsula.

Since it is just his first season coaching the 49ers, it’s possible that the front office could give Tomsula a little time to get this team turned around. As fans stop showing up to the new stadium in Santa Clara, though, it certainly doesn’t bode well to his future with the team. If it does turn out that the San Francisco 49ers rumors are correct and Tomsula is close to being fired, the team could look to an interim head coach until the NFL offseason. Then it could look to make a splash with a recognizable name getting put in charge.

There is a lot that needs to be fixed within the 49ers’ organization, especially if the franchise doesn’t want to lose all the momentum it gained from fan support in the Harbaugh era. Can Blaine Gabbert turn out to be the answer that the franchise needs? Or will the San Francisco 49ers’ front office see that it is time to clean house and move on?
