‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ International Trailer Drops, Revealing Tons Of New Footage

A brand new international trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been uploaded to Disney’s Japanese YouTube account, and the clip is full of new scenes from the movie, as yet unseen.

The trailer is no doubt set to fire off another round of debate regarding The Force Awakens, as it reveals several tantalizing new bits of information. The undeniable star of the clip is BB-8, as the Verge points out, and fans will be happy to note that they get a chance to hear the droid speak in the newest Star Wars trailer (while Rey can apparently understand him clearly, even without a translator like C-3PO). The trailer reveals new scenes of the First Order’s attack on Jakku, including a menacing shot of TIE fighters approaching, silhouetted by a setting sun. We get a brief glimpse of C-3PO’s new red arm, as well as Princess Leia in a control center, but some of the most intriguing moments pertain to seemingly small additions which could potentially rock the Star Wars saga.

Much like in the last trailer, Kylo Ren can be seen pledging to finish the work that Darth Vader started. Unlike that trailer, however, his line is extended and begins with “I will fulfill our destiny,” as the screen cuts to a shot of Vader’s charred and melted helmet. Fans will no doubt fixate on the use of “our,” wondering if Ren is referring to the First Order, the Sith/ Knights of Ren, or something much deeper.

With the absence of Luke Skywalker from all of the promotional materials for the newest Star Wars film, fans have theorized that he could be the man behind Kylo Ren’s mask, as CNN reports (they assert that Adam Driver’s casting in the role is nothing more than misdirection). With the realization that Kylo Ren sees Vader’s mission as “our” destiny, the evidence that Ren could be linked to the Skywalker family in some larger capacity (even if he isn’t Luke) is growing.

Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy mentioned several months ago that Disney’s main Star Wars sequel trilogy would primarily follow the exploits of the Skywalker family. Director J.J. Abrams, meanwhile, revealed in an interview that it was no accident that Finn and Rey’s last names aren’t known to fans. This provoked a round of speculation that one of the pair could be a descendant of the Skywalker clan, fueled even further by footage of Finn wielding Anakin’s old lightsaber.

The new trailer definitely hints at such an arrangement, as Rey converses with BB-8 in the beginning, telling the droid that she is waiting for her “family.” With this revelation regarding Rey’s presence on Jakku, it isn’t too much of a logical jump to suggest that it may be the First Order’s attack that brings Han Solo and Chewbacca to the desert planet. Should she be the newest scion of the Skywalker clan, hidden away from the remnants of the Empire, it makes sense that they would want to make sure of her safety in the wake of such an attack.

Rey’s safety is sure to be an issue, as the new trailer reveals Kylo Ren holding his broadsword lightsaber to her neck during a confrontation on a forested planet, which may be a more temperate region of Starkiller Base, as the Inquisitr previously reported. If fan theories are to be believed (at least one of which looks all but certain to be true), the newest trailer may have just revealed that the galactic conflict in Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become more of a family affair than fans have yet realized.
