IMAX will be home to the Hunger Games sequel, “Catching Fire,” according to an announcement made by Lionsgate, meaning that the movie will see some sequences shot in the IMAX format.

The Hollywood Reporter adds that Lionsgate motion picture group co-chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger said Wednesday:

“We are thrilled to continue the productive partnership we enjoyed with Imax on the first installment of The Hunger Games.”

New director Francis Lawrence appears to want the Hunger Games sequel to be even bigger than its predecessor. He will succeed with IMAX, seeing how Katniss, Peeta, and Gale will be 70 fee tall.

First Showing notes that:

“The sequel sees Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) returning to The Hunger Games arena yet again for the Third Quarter Quell, the 75th anniversary of the brutal contest. But this time they’re sent into the arena with double the tributes, which are also composed of surviving victors from the previous Hunger Games.”

Rumors are circulating for who will play new characters, such as tribute Finnick Odair, however all rumors so far have been said to be false. First Showing notes that a crucial role has been offered to Philip Seymour Hoffman, but he has yet to accept the offer.

According to MTV, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” will only be the sixth major studio film to be shot partially in the IMAX format, with previous films including “The Dark Knight, and its follow-up film “The Dark Knight Rises,” which is said to contain about an hour of the 70mm IMAX footage. Brad Bird has also filmed some key action pieces for “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” in the IMAX format.
