Johnson, a fifth round draft pick by the Cardinals in 2006, spent two seasons in Arizona before joining the Bengals in 2008. Over the course of his 64 games (16 starts) in Cincinnati, the former Louisville project registered 210 tackles, 3 interceptions and 3.5 sacks.

The 29-year-old’s best season came in 2008, when he recorded a career-high 83 tackles in 9 starts.

In addition to Brandon Johnson, the Steelers also acquired veteran long snapper Matt Katula, released tight end Wes Lyons and placed wide receiver Connor Dixon on the waived/injured list.

According to the SteelersDepot.com, Lyons was signed as an undrafted free-agent prior to the 2011-2012 NFL season. After being released during the regular season, he was resigned to the off-season roster and moved to the tight end position.

Dixon, who was signed as an undrafted free agent after the draft, suffered a leg or ankle injury during off-season training sessions.

Katula, a seven-year NFL vet, has appeared in 93 games with three different teams, most recently with the Minnesota Vikings for the final five games of the 2011 seasons.

He also spent time with the Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots. CBS Sports reports Katula will compete with Greg Warren, the Steelers’ long snapper since 2005.
