Summer Bird wins the 2009 Belmont Stakes


11-1 shot Summer Bird has won the 141st running (2009) Belmont Stakes.

Summer Bird, ridden by Kent Desormeaux stormed down to home straight to take over Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. Calvin Borel on Mine That Bid was aiming for the jockey Triple Crown after having taken Rachel Alexander to victory in the Preakness Stakes.

Coming into the second place, and ahead Mine That Bird who crossed the line third, was second favorite Dunkirk.

At a press conference after the race, Bird said that “I felt I was on the best horse coming in…We just got outrun.” Notably Summer Bird, and Mine That Bird both from 2004 Belmont Stakes Winner Birdstone.
