Before Nintendo released the 3DS, we saw several iterations of its predecessor, the DS. Nintendo released small versions, big versions, and even a version with all-new features including an online store.

One might assume that Nintendo plans to do something similar with the 3DS–releasing updated versions with new features, dimensions, and things of that nature. According to Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, however, that may not be the case.

IGN asked the famed Nintendo developer to comment on a report from Nikkei which stated that Nintendo was to release a Nintendo 3DS XL and, he suggested that Nintendo’s focus is on their next-generation handheld rather than a new iteration of the 3DS.

“I really feel like I’m satisfied with the 3DS hardware as it is. I feel like it’s the best for this generation. What we’re thinking about right now is probably going to be for a future generation of handheld.”

The Nintendo 3DS didn’t quite turn out as well as the company originally hoped, although it has raked in some pretty respectable sales. Still, it wouldn’t be surprising if Nintendo does decide to move on from the Nintendo 3DS.
