College football fans can watch Notre Dame, the ninth-ranked team in the nation, live online for free as they take on the most surprising college football team of the 2015 season, the Temple Owls, who come into what may be the biggest game in the Philadelphia-based school’s history with an undefeated record of 7-0. The Fighting Irish have one loss — three weeks ago at Clemson — against their six wins.

Notre Dame has been installed by Las Vegas oddsmakers as a 9.5-point favorite, even though they’ll be playing on the road in what will likely by a packed and feverish Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Temple are currently ranked 21st nationally, compare to ninth for Notre Dame. And the Orish have the extra motivation of needing a win to avoid what would likely be elimination from College Football Playoff series consideration with a second loss on their record.

But in what is already the best year of Temple football, if not in history than at least in recent memory, the Owls will not be looking at Notre Dame as a foe that can’t be beaten. With a complex, shut-down defense dominated by experienced upper classmen, Temple appears to have a chance against anybody.

In fact, according an advanced statistical analysis by the sports site SB Nation, Notre Dame has only a 58 percent “win probability” in the Temple game, and the Irish are likely to win by a projected margin of just 3.4 points.

In fact, it was in March 2001 that the other schools in the Big East Conference voted to expel Temple from that league, mainly because the team rarely drew fans to its home games. In the 1995 season, Temple averaged just over 4,000 fans per game.

But third-year Coach Matt Ruhle has worked something like a miracle in Philadelphia, with Temple — who now play in the lightly-regarded American Athletic Conference — taking a 2-10 team to a.500 record in just his second season. And now the Owls are undefeated and about to take on the most storied team in college football history, and Notre Dame team widely believed to have a legitimate shot at its incredible 12th national championship.

As for Temple’s offense, the Owls lean heavily on 19-year-old sophomore running back Jahad Thomas, who has already rushed for 822 yards with 12 touchdowns on 165 carries in the seven Temple games in 2015.

Notre Dame and Temple have faced each other only one time ever — and that was just two years ago, in the season opener of what became the aforementioned 2-10 season for Temple. Not surprisingly, Notre Dame won that game 28-6. But the 2015 Temple football team is an Owl of a different color indeed.
