Hillary Clinton: Promise To Ban All Handguns Proven Untrue

False memes and quotes created to look like presidential candidates said them continue to make their way across social media. The latest person to become victim in the fake quotes frenzy is Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, but similar to other false statements associated with a few of her fellow candidates, it’s been proven false.

Snopes reports that a Tumblr page, entitled “Shocking Hillary Clinton Quotes” published a meme on October 25, indicating that Clinton vowed to ban all handguns if elected president. The quote allegedly happened during an August 8 interview with Iowa’s Des Moines Register.

Hillary Clinton Fake Quote

The Tumblr page promises that all quotes are sourced, and attempts to back it up by leaving a link to the official Des Moines Register website, the link doesn’t lead to the aforementioned quote. Instead, it takes users to the news site’s main page. Yet, after researching The Des Moines Register’s archives, the alleged Clinton quote is nowhere to be found. In fact, the quote also isn’t published by any credible news site, therefore, there isn’t any valid proof that Clinton made the statement that she’s accused of.

With the presidential election coming up in 2016, numerous anonymous internet users are beginning to create fictional quotes and attempting to pass them off as valid. Clinton is just the latest victim in a string of other false memes. For instance, earlier this month, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was accused of calling all Republicans “stupid” and stating that they’ll believe anything he says. After researching the supposed source, the quote was proven false.

Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina was also falsely quoted when an anonymous user created meme quoting her as saying the following.

“If it were not for the historic voyages of Christopher Columbus, we would all be speaking Indian and working in casinos today.”

Although the meme appears to be authentic, with a Fox News logo at the bottom, Snopes determined that the quote never took place.

False quotes and memes aren’t limited to the current presidential candidates. The Daily Dot reports that numerous internet users have created false quotes coming from the nation’s founding fathers and other historical figures, including Abraham Lincoln and Ben Franklin.

Abraham Lincoln False Quote

While some people may see these false quotes as harmless fun, others disagree and feel that false memes are discrediting the nation’s founding fathers, as well as those who want to continue to help lead the nation.

MSNBC reports that fake quotes with the nation’s current presidential candidates heightened earlier this year when Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker falsely quoted Thomas Jefferson.

“Thomas Jefferson said it best when the Founding Father said that ‘government is best which governs least.'”

Apparently, Walker fell for a false quote, as Jefferson never said this. Shortly after, Senator Rand Paul falsely quoted Patrick Henry. While it’s not known if their falling for these quotes started the memes of fake quotes by the current presidential candidates, it certainly increased dramatically afterwards. Yet, while Walker and Paul more than likely made an honest mistake, it’s evident that the majority of people creating these false presidential candidate quotes are doing so maliciously.

Clinton has yet to comment on the false quote, but given that she’s been falsely quoted several times in the past, it’s likely that she will probably overlook it unless addressed directly. As the Democratic presidential frontrunner, it’s not just anonymous internet users that are taking aim at Hillary Clinton. Two new GOP groups, Future45 and PAC, financed by Republican donors, are “focused on holding Secretary Clinton accountable by making certain that the American public has the full breadth of information on Secretary Clinton’s failures.”
