Charlize Theron is no stranger to going to the extreme for a movie role, but it seems the Snow White and the Huntsman actress has pulled an Anne Hathaway and shaved off all of her beautiful hair.

Theron stepped out with her son, Jackson, in Beverly Hills, prompting questions by PEOPLE, who notes that she hasn’t been seen without a hat since June 6th, when she was seen walking into a hair salon. A rep for Theron confirmed to PEOPLE that she shaved her head last week, in order to play her role as Furiosa in the upcoming movie Mad Max: Fury Road.

The film, an adaptation of the 1979 Mad Max film with Mel Gibson, also stars Tom Hardy, and will start shooting next month in Africa. It was slated to begin in 2009, but Us Magazine reports that the film was shelved after a series of production setbacks. Theron told Us while promoting Prometheus in London on May 30 that:

“It’s been three years: It’s time to skin this cat already! I’m very excited about it.”

Charlize Theron continued on, saying:

“The original Mad Max created such a vivid world, so to go back and re-imagine it and re-play in that sandbox sounds like fun to me. It’s a really challenging piece of material.”

Snarkfood writes that Theron should stop hiding her head under all those fedoras and beanies. Laura Vess writes:

“A rep for Theron confirms to PEOPLE that she shaved her head last week for her role as Furiosa in the upcoming movie Mad Max: Fury Road. The action film, which costars Tom Hardy, starts shooting next month in Africa.”
