You think you’ve heard of news reporters “going off” in the past? Well, this one took it up a notch. In a viral video, you’ll witness reporter Jonathan Pie unfiltered.

Often times, you may hear news enthusiasts express that there’s no real news being reported these days. With all the “online videos” available, it’s hard to tell what’s real news and what’s satirical.

While this video offers some very real events and in-your-face reporting on current issues, it, too, is satirical by situation. While Jonathan Pie is a real reporter, as to the nature of reporting, the circumstance in this video may not exactly have been an authentic one.

According to News – Australia, Jonathan Pie is standing near the Palace of Westminster when giving his broadcast. As you can hear from the video, he’s not too happy about having to give the report in the current weather. Instead, he presumably asks his remote production team for the reason he can’t give the broadcast inside of the building. However, he didn’t receive the response he wanted. And that’s when he flipped.

Yet, it was all staged — though his banter was a “real world,” extremely opinionated take on current events. This is probably worthy of appearing on the Onion News Network. The Onion is a television show known for cropping believable-yet-fake viral stories. Its website is also satirically based and does post “news” stories which tend to spread like wildfire.

Nevertheless, as his Facebook page notes, he’s a “UK News reporter…[with] brutally honest views on the world of politics.” Independent reporters have been known to make a real name for themselves — mostly in part because they aren’t filtered by FCC regulations underneath corporate enterprises.

Likewise, Jonathan Pie has acquired a following via his social media accounts. On the video noted in this article, since his post date of October 5, 2015, the video has gained approximately 900 comments and 600,000 views.

In the news reporter‘s video description, it notes as follows.

“UK News reporter Jonathan Pie has a go at David Cameron, Alan Sugar, Nuclear Weapons, Matt Damon’s treatment in the press, Jeremy Corbyn’s treatment by the press…you name it, he has a go about it!”

And that’s exactly what he does and more. While much of his material is satire-based, he does have quite a way with capturing the audience. Yahoo! News – Australia specifically calls him a “spoof” reporter.

However, he seems to be doing something right. According to the Handbook of Independent Journalism, people tend to engage more in conflict stories. The author, Deborah Potter, states as follows.

“Are people in disagreement about this? It’s human nature to be interested in stories that involve conflict, tension, or public debate. People like to take sides, and see whose position will prevail. Conflict doesn’t always entail pitting one person’s views against another. Stories about doctors battling disease or citizens opposing an unjust law also involve conflict.”

Relevantly, Pew Research Center reports that United States citizens are changing the way they get their news. While local and network news centers continue to prosper, cable news and newspapers have been dwindling over the years. Moreover, podcast and video news blogs have been on the rise, according to the report.

Jonathan Pie would fall into that category for his particular news segments. Of course, if this had been a real situation, Mr. Pie possibly wouldn’t have had a job at the end of the day. Regulations are just as strict off-camera as they are on-camera. In this day and age, video leaks happen quickly. And the last thing a network would tolerate is a video leak of one of their own being this “open,” while the cameras are supposed to be off.
